Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Safehouse

We couldn't return to Manhattan. The attack had been coordinated with terrifying precision, meaning Caldera had compromised our primary travel routes. Marcus diverted the SUV to an unmarked compound nestled deep in the wooded hills of northern New Jersey—a private estate owned by Damon that appeared on no public records.

The house was cold, modern, and built like a bunker, surrounded by ten-foot stone walls and state-of-the-art surveillance.

As soon as we stepped through the front door, Marcus was already coordinating reinforcements on his radio. I immediately took Damon by the wrist and dragged him toward the kitchen.

""Sit,"" I ordered, using the same commanding tone he had used on me a hundred times.

Damon raised an eyebrow, but for once, he complied, sitting down on a barstool while I ransacked the cabinets until I found an industrial first-aid kit.

""Take off your shirt,"" I said, my hands still trembling slightly from the lingering shock of the ambush.

Damon reached up, unbuttoning his blood-stained shirt slowly. As he slipped the fabric off his shoulders, I caught my breath. His torso was sculpted, powerful, but marked by several old, faded scars that told the violent story of how he had built his empire. High on his left bicep, a deep groove was steadily leaking bright red blood.

I poured antiseptic over the wound. Damon didn't even flinch. He just watched my face with laser focus as I carefully cleaned the torn skin and began wrapping sterile gauze around his arm.

""You took a bullet for me,"" I whispered, my voice thick with emotion.

""I shielded you,"" he corrected softly. ""There's a difference.""

""You could have been killed!"" I looked up, tears blurring my vision. ""You're Damon Cross. You have thousands of people who work for you. You have a multi-billion-dollar empire. Why would you throw your life away for an executive secretary?""

Damon caught my wrists, stopping my frantic movements. He pulled me gently between his parted knees until my hips rested against his. His grey eyes were wide, dark, and utterly stripped of pride.

""Because the empire means nothing without you,"" he confessed, the raw truth hitting me like a physical blow. ""For two years, Elena, I built this company into a legitimate fortress because I wanted to offer you a life that wasn't covered in blood and shadows. I wanted to be worthy of you. When Sal Caldera pointed a gun in your direction today, I realized I would burn the entire world to ash before I let anyone hurt you.""

My heart shattered and reformed in a single second. ""Damon...""

""Don't run from me anymore,"" he whispered, his hand coming up to cup my jaw, his thumb wiping away a fallen tear. ""Please.""

The vulnerability in the most dangerous man in New York brought down every wall I had ever built. I leaned down and pressed my lips against his.

The kiss began with cautious desperation, but quickly ignited into a blazing fire. Damon groaned into my mouth, his uninjured arm wrapping tightly around my waist, lifting me effortlessly onto the kitchen counter. For two years, we had hidden behind corporate professionalism, cold glances, and unspoken desire. Now, in the quiet safety of the hideout, the dam broke completely.

His kiss was demanding, possessive, yet intensely reverent. When we finally broke apart, gasping for air in the dim light of the kitchen, Damon rested his forehead against mine, his heartbeat thudding violently against my ribs.

""Now you're mine,"" he murmured against my lips. ""And I'm never letting you go.""
