Chapter 1 - The Cold Walk Down 5th Avenue

""Fine,"" Damon repeated quietly, his tailored wool coat swinging slightly in the biting autumn breeze. He gripped the leather handle of my briefcase with long, deliberate fingers. ""If you are walking ten blocks through midtown Manhattan in freezing weather, Elena, you are not doing it alone.""
I froze. Marcus Hale let out a slow, nearly inaudible exhale behind us, instantly realizing that arguing was pointless. Marcus quietly shut the heavy black door of the Mercedes sedan and touched the brim of his cap before slipping into the driver’s seat.
""Damon, give me my briefcase back,"" I demanded, though my voice lacked the authoritative bite I intended. The sheer absurdity of the most feared shipping magnate in New York playing escort on a crowded public sidewalk felt like a bizarre fever dream.
""You wanted to establish boundaries,"" Damon said, stepping onto the sidewalk and falling into step beside me without checking whether I followed. He knew I had no choice. ""Consider this a compromise. You get your exercise. I ensure my executive secretary and the sensitive merger files she carries arrive in one piece.""
The wind gusted between the skyscrapers, sharp and unforgiving. I pulled my thin trench coat tighter around my throat, shivering despite myself. Within two strides, Damon noticed. Without breaking his rhythm or glancing down, he unbuttoned his heavy cashmere overcoat, slipped it off his broad shoulders, and draped it over mine.
The heat radiating from the fabric hit me immediately, carrying his intoxicating signature scent of cedarwood, expensive tobacco, and rain. The coat swallowed me whole, reaching past my knees and completely enveloping my smaller frame.
""I told you I was fine,"" I muttered, my cheeks flushing hot beneath the cold air.
""You're shivering, Elena,"" he murmured, his voice dropping into that dark, velvety register that always made my stomach do quiet flips. ""You're brilliant at logistics, but terrible at self-preservation.""
We walked in tense, electric silence past the glowing shop windows of Fifth Avenue. Commuters rushed past, completely oblivious to the fact that the handsome, brooding man carrying a floral-embellished woman’s briefcase had federal prosecutors losing sleep across three states. Every few blocks, his shoulder brushed mine. Each accidental touch sent a quiet shockwave straight through my ribs.
""Why are you doing this?"" I asked as we stopped at a red pedestrian light on 48th Street. Steam billowed from a nearby subway grate, wrapping around us like mist.
Damon turned his head, his steel-gray gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that made the surrounding city fade into static. ""Doing what?""
""The car. The sudden appearances at lunch. The cancelled supplier contracts,"" I counted off, refusing to look away this time. ""And now playing chaperone on a freezing Tuesday night. Marcus told me you haven't taken a personal walk in New York since 2018.""
A faint, dangerous smirk touched the corner of Damon's lips. ""Marcus talks too much. I'll have to remind him of his non-disclosure agreement.""
""Damon.""
His smile vanished, replaced by an expression so raw and focused it stopped the breath in my throat. He took a half-step closer, crowding my personal space until I was completely boxed in between his towering frame and the streetlight pole.
""You think this is sudden?"" Damon asked, his voice barely louder than the hum of passing yellow cabs. ""You've worked three feet away from my desk for twenty-four months, Elena. For two years, I watched you remember every detail of my life while completely ignoring your own comfort. In Miami, when I saw another man's hands touching your skin, something snapped. And I realized that keeping my distance was no longer an option.""
My pulse hammered wildly against my temples. The pedestrian signal clicked to white, but neither of us moved.

""I am your employee,"" I whispered, though the words sounded frail and unconvincing even to my own ears.
""You are,"" Damon agreed softly, his gloved thumb brushing a stray strand of dark hair away from my forehead. The touch was impossibly tender for a man who commanded an empire built on ruthless control. ""Which is why I've shown extraordinary patience. But contracts can be rewritten, Elena. Keep walking.""
