Chapter 2 - The Red Line in the Penthouse

By the time we reached my modest apartment building in Murray Hill, my nerves were frayed raw. The doorman, an elderly man named Frank who had known me since I moved in, nearly choked on his coffee when he saw the billionaire Damon Cross casually holding the door for me while carrying my battered work bag.

""Thank you for the walk, Mr. Cross,"" I said formally in the lobby, reaching out to take my briefcase. ""And for the coat.""

Damon didn't hand the bag over. Instead, his sharp eyes scanned the dimly lit lobby, lingering on the flickering hallway bulb and the single security monitor sitting unattended behind Frank’s desk. A muscle ticked in his jaw.

""Your building's security is nonexistent,"" he stated flatly.

""It has a lock, a doorman, and rent I can actually afford on an executive salary,"" I shot back, reaching for the coat collar to take it off.

Damon’s hand came up, his fingers lightly gripping the lapel of his overcoat right near my collarbone, stopping me. The proximity was overwhelming. I could see the flecks of silver in his dark irises.

""Keep the coat,"" he ordered quietly. ""And I'm walking you to your door.""

""Damon, this is ridiculous. It's the fourth floor, not a war zone.""

""In my world, Elena, there is very little difference. Move.""

We rode the ancient, creaking elevator up in suffocating silence. When we stepped onto the fourth floor, the hallway carpet was worn and the air smelled faintly of someone's garlic pasta. Damon looked completely out of place—a dark prince standing in a bargain-bin hallway.

Outside Apartment 4B, I turned and held out my hand. ""My briefcase.""

He finally set it down, but he didn't step back. Instead, he leaned one broad shoulder against the doorframe, his dark gaze raking over my face with calculated deliberation.

""Tomorrow morning, a courier will arrive at eight,"" Damon said smoothly. ""He will have the keys to a brownstone on the Upper East Side. Fully secured, private garage, 24-hour private detail.""

I blinked, momentarily paralyzed by sheer disbelief. ""You are buying me an apartment?""

""I already bought it,"" he corrected without missing a beat. ""Six weeks ago. It was being renovated.""

Anger sparked through my chest, cutting through the heavy haze of attraction. ""You can't just buy my life, Damon! I am an independent woman. I worked hard for everything I have. I didn't ask for a golden cage, and I certainly didn't ask to be your kept woman!""

Damon stepped forward instantly, closing the distance between us until my back pressed flat against my apartment door. He didn't touch me, but the sheer wall of his physical presence was inescapable.

""Never use that phrase with me,"" he growled, the calm CEO façade slipping away to reveal the dangerous predator beneath. ""If I wanted a kept woman, I wouldn't have spent two years respecting your boundaries while every instinct in my body told me to take what I wanted. I am protecting you because the Caldera family has been watching my movements since Miami. And yesterday, their scouts took photographs of you leaving my office.""

The blood in my veins turned to ice. ""The Calderas?""

""They know you matter to me,"" Damon whispered, his voice dangerously low. ""Which means right now, you are the easiest target in this city. You want boundaries? Fine. But you will stay alive while you fight me on them.""
