Chapter 3 - Marked by the Calderas

The morning sun didn't bring relief; it brought cold, unadulterated dread.

True to his word, a discreet courier in a sharp black suit arrived at my door at exactly 8:00 AM. He handed me a sleek black leather folder containing an electronic key fob, a deed registered under a private trust that listed my name as the sole beneficiary, and a brief handwritten note on Damon's heavy cream stationery:

Pack what matters. Marcus will handle the rest. Don't fight me on this, Elena. You're out of time. — D.

I stared at the heavy paper, tracing his sharp, angular handwriting. My heart fluttered with a chaotic mixture of fury and terror. The Caldera crime syndicate wasn't just a rumor; they were Damon’s blood rivals, a brutal legacy family operating out of Brooklyn and New Jersey. If they had photographed me, my quiet, anonymous life was effectively over.

I refused to take the entire day off. Instead of waiting for Marcus, I packed a single suitcase with my essential clothes, grabbed my laptop, and took a taxi directly to Cross Maritime headquarters.

When the private elevator doors opened onto the 42nd floor, the entire executive suite was buzzing with unnatural tension. Security guards with visible sidearms were stationed near the emergency stairwells—something I had never seen in two years of working there.

I marched past the receptionist and pushed open the double oak doors of Damon’s corner office without knocking.

Damon was standing behind his mahogany desk, surrounded by Marcus and three men in tailored Italian suits I had never met. Blueprints of a shipping terminal were laid out across the desk alongside high-resolution aerial photographs.

""Elena,"" Damon said immediately, cutting off whatever man was speaking. His eyes swept over me from head to toe, checking for harm before his jaw tightened. ""You weren't supposed to be here.""

""This is my office,"" I replied, setting my briefcase down on the conference table. ""And we need to talk.""

Marcus gave the other three men a silent nod. Within five seconds, all four men filed out of the room, Marcus pulling the heavy double doors shut until a solid click echoed through the room.

Damon rounded the desk, his movements fluid and predatory. ""You took a yellow cab. After what I told you last night.""

""I am not going to hide in a luxury bunker while you wage a shadow war!"" I said, stepping right up to him. ""If I am in danger because of my association with you, I deserve to know the full truth. Exactly what did the Calderas take pictures of?""

Damon stopped inches from me. Without a word, he reached into his breast pocket and tossed a glossy four-by-six photograph onto the desk.

I looked down.

The photograph had been taken through a telephoto lens on the Florida beach. It captured the exact moment Damon had stepped in front of Marcus, leaning down over my sun chair, his eyes blazing with open, possessive fury. Anyone looking at that image could see the absolute truth: Damon Cross wasn't defending an employee. He was claiming a woman.

""Sal Caldera sent that to my personal line at midnight,"" Damon said, his voice deadly quiet. ""With a message asking how much the shipping routes in Newark were worth to keep his men from visiting your apartment.""

My breath hitched. ""He threatened to kidnap me.""

""He threatened to touch you,"" Damon corrected, his eyes darkening to the color of storm clouds. ""Which means Sal Caldera has signed his own death warrant.""
