Chapter 8 - Pursuit on the West Side Highway

Arya burst through the service exit of the Lexington Depository into the damp chill of Midtown, just in time to see a sleek silver Porsche Cayenne tear away from the curb, tires screeching against the wet pavement.
Before she could sprint toward the street, the black Mercedes-Maybach pulled up beside her, its tires sliding to a halt with pinpoint precision. The rear door flew open. Nikolai was already in the passenger seat, his phone pressed to his ear as he gave rapid tactical orders in Russian.
""Get in!"" Nikolai shouted.
Arya dove into the back seat, slamming the heavy door behind her. The driver floored the accelerator, the twin-turbo V8 engine roaring to life as the armored vehicle surged forward, weaving violently through Manhattan's gridlocked traffic in hot pursuit of the fleeing Porsche.
""Roman has closed off the tunnels to New Jersey,"" Nikolai said, hanging up the phone and turning to her. ""Arthur has only one viable escape route: his private helicopter pad on the West Side Highway at 30th Street. If he reaches that chopper, he's in international airspace within an hour.""
""He won't reach it,"" Arya said, reloading the weapon on her lap with cold, mechanical efficiency.
The chase turned onto the West Side Highway, the gray expanse of the Hudson River flashing past on their left. Sirens wailed in the distance as Port Authority police and NYPD squad cars struggled to catch up with the two high-speed vehicles tearing down the asphalt at nearly ninety miles per hour.
Arthur’s driver swerved erratically, sideswiping a commercial delivery truck to create a barrier behind them. The Maybach smashed through the scattered debris without losing momentum, its reinforced bull-bar clearing the path effortlessly.
""Ram him,"" Arya said, leaning between the front seats. ""Take out his rear axle!""
Nikolai glanced at her, an eyebrow raised in quiet admiration. ""You heard the lady, Grigori. Spin them out.""
The driver nudged the steering wheel, closing the distance between the two vehicles until the Maybach's front bumper caught the rear quarter panel of the Porsche. Grigori executed a flawless PIT maneuver. The Cayenne spun violently out of control, tires smoking, before crashing sideways into the concrete barrier separating the highway from the Hudson River Greenway.
The Porsche’s engine sputtered and died, steam hissing from its crushed radiator.
The Maybach screeched to a halt twenty yards away. Arya kicked open her door before the car had fully stopped. She stepped onto the asphalt, the wind from the river whipping her dark hair across her face, the assault rifle resting firmly against her shoulder.
The driver of the Porsche kicked open his crumpled door and stumbled out, his hand reaching for a pistol tucked into his waistband. Arya fired a single shot into the pavement an inch from his boot. The man immediately raised his hands, dropping the gun and collapsing to his knees in surrender.
On the other side of the wreck, Arthur Vance crawled through the shattered passenger window, dragging his bruised, battered body onto the cold concrete. His tailored suit was torn to shreds, his forehead bleeding heavily from the impact with the dashboard. In his right hand, he still clutched a leather briefcase containing his emergency passports and bearer bonds.
Arya walked toward him, her boots clicking rhythmically against the asphalt. Each step felt like the culmination of fourteen months of fear, exile, and grief.
Arthur rolled onto his back, gasping for breath as he stared up at the barrel of the rifle pointed directly between his eyes.
""Aurelia... please,"" Arthur wheezed, blood flecking his lips. ""I'm family. Your father wouldn't want this. He was a man of peace... he forgave—""
""My father was a mathematician, Arthur,"" Arya interrupted, her voice dropping into an icy whisper that cut through the wailing sirens in the distance. ""And he taught me that when you eliminate a toxic variable from an equation, you don't show mercy. You balance the books.""
Nikolai stepped up beside her, folding his arms across his chest as he looked down at the pathetic figure on the ground. He didn't say a word. He didn't try to stop her. He simply stood by her side, an immovable mountain of dark power offering her absolute, unconditional authority.
Arthur looked into Arya's eyes, searching for a trace of the frightened niece who used to pour tea at family dinners. He found nothing. Only the cold, unbreakable steel of a survivor.
Arya lowered the rifle.
Arthur let out a pathetic sigh of relief. ""Thank God... thank you, Aurelia—""
CRACK!
Arya’s boot slammed into Arthur’s jaw, knocking him unconscious instantly. He collapsed onto the cold asphalt, limp and broken.
""Death is too quick for you, Arthur,"" Arya said quietly, looking down at his motionless body. ""You're going to spend the rest of your life in ADX Florence, watching every single dollar you ever stole get dismantled.""

She turned to Nikolai, tossing the carbon-fiber hard drive into his hands. ""Call your contacts at the Department of Justice. Give them Arthur Vance and the corrupt city officials. Keep the ninety million from the offshore accounts for your family. We're done.""
Nikolai caught the drive, his blue eyes gleaming with an intense, burning respect. ""Not quite done, Aurelia. We still have to settle our contract.""
