Chapter 3 - Blood on the Linens

Arya maintained her icy facade, though her mind was calculating exit vectors at frantic speed. The Onyx Room had no windows to the street—only bulletproof skylights twenty feet overhead. The service door led to the kitchen, but Roman's men were blocking the hallway. If she screamed, Laurent and the kitchen staff would cower in terror; they were cooks and servers, not mercenaries.
""I need access to a terminal to retrieve the cipher,"" Arya lied smoothly, tilting her head with calculated nonchalance. ""The encryption uses a rotating three-tier hash. It's stored in a secure cloud repository. If you force the password, the entire drive wipes itself automatically.""
Roman leaned forward, his massive fists clenching. ""She's lying, boss. Let me take two of her fingers off in the back alley. She'll sing the entire alphabet in three minutes.""
""Quiet, Roman,"" Nikolai said, his eyes never leaving Arya's face. ""She isn't lying about the wipe protocol. Julian Vance was paranoid to the point of clinical insanity. He would never keep an unencrypted ledger."" He turned back to Arya. ""You have until tomorrow morning to produce the code. Until then, you remain under my personal custody.""
Before Arya could reply, the heavy chandelier hanging above the center of the table flickered violently. A sharp crack echoed through the ceiling, followed by the terrifying sound of glass shattering into a thousand pieces.
""Get down!"" Nikolai roared, lunging across the table with terrifying speed.
His heavy arm caught Arya around the waist, dragging her out of the chair and slamming her to the carpeted floor beneath the overhang of the mahogany table. A split second later, a hail of automatic gunfire tore through the reinforced skylight above. High-caliber rounds chewed through the plaster ceiling, shattering crystal wine glasses, splintering the dining table, and showering the room in a deadly blizzard of pulverized wood and blood.
One of the guards standing near the oak doors took two rounds to the chest, collapsing backward with a wet thud. Roman drew a suppressed Glock from his holster, rolling behind a marble serving cart as he returned fire blindly toward the roof.
""Who the hell is that?"" Roman shouted over the deafening roar of automatic weapons. ""Is it the Bratva? The Greeks?""
""Worse,"" Nikolai hissed against Arya's ear. He was lying half over her, his body acting as an involuntary human shield. His Tom Ford suit was ruined, covered in plaster dust and crimson wine. ""It's Arthur's cleaners. Your uncle didn't just sell your father out to mine. He’s been working with a splinter faction of the federal task force to wipe out the entire bloodline.""
Arya didn't waste time panicking. Adrenaline surged through her veins, replacing fear with cold, clinical survival instinct. She reached down to the floor where the fallen steak knife lay amid the shattered china. Her fingers wrapped around the serrated handle.
""If we stay under this table, they'll drop a grenade through that skylight in ten seconds,"" Arya yelled over the noise. ""There's a service dumbwaiter behind the wine storage racks. It connects to the basement garbage chute!""
Nikolai glanced at her, surprised by her tactical awareness. A fierce smirk touched his lips despite the hail of lead whistling inches above their heads. ""Lead the way, waitress.""
Nikolai drew a compact Makarov pistol from inside his jacket—the exact weapon Arya had spotted earlier. He raised it above the rim of the shattered table, firing three precise shots up through the broken skylight. A muffled scream echoed from the roof, followed by the heavy crash of an assailant tumbling off the building's edge into the alley below.
""Roman, cover the hallway! Move!"" Nikolai ordered.
Arya scrambled on hands and knees across the glass-strewn floor, keeping her head low as bullets chewed into the walls around them. She reached the mahogany wood paneling behind the wine rack, jammed her fingers into a hidden seam, and pulled hard. A concealed panel swung open, revealing the narrow metal shaft of an antique dumbwaiter used for hauling heavy wine crates from the cellar.
""Get in,"" Nikolai commanded, pulling her toward the opening.
""It can only hold one person's weight at a time,"" Arya shouted back, looking into the dark shaft.
""Then you go first,"" Nikolai said, grabbing her by the waist and lifting her effortlessly into the metal cage. ""Pull the emergency release lever on the right. It drops straight to the basement.""
As Arya reached for the rusted iron lever, the heavy doors of the Onyx Room burst open. A masked gunman dressed in tactical black gear stepped into the room, raising a submachine gun aimed directly at Nikolai’s exposed back.
Without thinking, Arya lunged forward from inside the dumbwaiter. She hurled the heavy serrated steak knife with all her strength. The steel blade struck the gunman squarely in the throat with a sickening crunch. The man gagged, dropped his weapon, and collapsed into the doorway.
Nikolai froze, looking from the dead shooter on the floor back to the twenty-two-year-old girl sitting inside the dumbwaiter with ice in her veins.

""Clay pigeons, my ass,"" Nikolai muttered, his lips curling into a stunned grin.
He reached in, slammed his hand onto the release lever, and the dumbwaiter plunged downward into the darkness just as another volley of gunfire erupted above.
