Chapter 4 - The Safehouse in SoHo

The dumbwaiter crashed onto the concrete floor of the sub-basement with a violent shudder, jarring Arya’s teeth and sending a cloud of coal dust swirling through the air. She kicked open the metal gate and rolled out onto the cold floor, her black waitress uniform torn at the shoulder, covered in plaster and dried wine.
Seconds later, the sound of heavy footsteps pounded down the iron spiral staircase adjacent to the boiler room. Arya reached into her boot, pulling out a concealed folding blade she had hidden before her shift began. She flattened herself against the damp brick wall, blade poised to strike.
""Don't stab me, Aurelia,"" Nikolai’s deep voice echoed from the stairwell.
He emerged from the shadows, his breathing steady despite having sprinted down four flights of stairs while dodging gunfire. His tie was gone, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, stained with dark smears of soot and soot. In his hand, the Makarov remained at the low-ready position. Behind him, Roman limped heavily, clutching a bleeding forearm wrapped tightly in a cloth napkin.
""Where is the other guard?"" Arya asked, lowering her blade.
""Dead,"" Roman grunted between clenched teeth. ""They had the front alley covered. We barely made it to the fire escape. The whole block will be crawling with NYPD and tactical teams within four minutes.""
""Then we don't have four minutes,"" Nikolai said smoothly. He walked over to an iron emergency hatch half-buried behind stacks of empty wine crates. He produced an old brass key from his pocket, unlocked the padlock, and kicked the hatch open. Cool, damp subway air rushed into the basement, accompanied by the low rumble of an approaching train. ""Old bootlegger's tunnel from Prohibition. It leads directly to the abandoned spur under Canal Street.""
Arya stared at him. ""You had an escape tunnel under the restaurant all along?""
""I own the building, little bird,"" Nikolai said, offering her a hand. ""I don't dine anywhere I can't leave through the sewers.""
She ignored his outstretched hand, climbing into the tunnel independently. For fifteen minutes, the trio navigated the pitch-black subterranean corridors of lower Manhattan, following the narrow beam of Nikolai’s smartphone flashlight. Water dripped from overhead pipes, and the smell of ozone and wet stone filled the air.
They emerged through a storm grate inside the basement of a discreet, nondescript art gallery in SoHo. A black armored Mercedes-Maybach was already idling in the rear loading bay, its engine barely whispering. A driver in a sharp dark suit stepped out, immediately opening the rear doors without asking a single question.
""Get in,"" Nikolai said, gesturing Arya inside.
""Where are we going?"" she demanded, refusing to step into the vehicle. ""You got your life saved back there. We're even. Let me go.""
Nikolai stepped closer, his imposing frame blocking the light from the gallery. Despite the dust and blood, an aura of supreme, unshakeable authority radiated from him. ""Those men were carrying suppressed MP5s and military-grade body armor. That wasn't a standard hit squad, Aurelia. That was Vanguard Global—the private military contractor your uncle put on retainer three months ago.""
Arya felt a chill settle deep in her bones. ""Arthur wouldn't hire mercenaries to shoot up a public restaurant.""
""Arthur knows your father left an insurance policy that can dismantle his entire empire,"" Nikolai said, his voice dropping to a low, persuasive baritone. ""And now he knows you survived Chicago. You walk out into Manhattan alone tonight, and you won't survive until sunrise. With me, you stay alive. In exchange, you help me destroy the man who murdered both our fathers.""
Arya hesitated, looking out toward the dimly lit street outside the loading dock. New York suddenly felt like a massive open cage, crawling with assassins and ghosts from her past. She had spent over a year running, hiding behind fake names and dirty aprons, living in constant terror of being recognized.
She turned her gaze back to Nikolai Sokolov. He was dangerous, ruthless, and entirely untrustworthy—a predator who ruled the city's shadows with an iron fist. But right now, his enemies were her enemies.
""If we do this,"" Arya said, her voice steady and venomous, ""I get fifty percent of everything Arthur stole from my family. And I pull the trigger on him myself.""
May you like
Nikolai looked at her for a long moment, a slow, intoxicating smile spreading across his face.
""Deal,"" he said, stepping aside and bowing slightly. ""Welcome to the family, Miss Vance.""
