Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Table

One year later.

The Mediterranean sun cast a golden glow across the terracotta rooftops of Sintra, Portugal. High on the hills overlooking the Atlantic, an ancient stone estate stood surrounded by lush olive groves, purple bougainvillea, and whispering pine trees.

Arya sat on the sun-drenched terrace, wearing a light linen sundress and dark sunglasses. On the marble table before her lay an open sketchbook filled with architectural drafts. For the past six months, she had been working with a local charity, designing community centers and libraries for underserved coastal towns—building things that lasted, using the resources she had reclaimed from the ashes of her family's name.

The gravel driveway crunched beneath the tires of a dark vintage Aston Martin.

Arya looked up, a radiant smile gracing her lips as the driver's door swung open.

Nikolai stepped out into the afternoon light. He wore a crisp white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, tailored trousers, and dark loafers—looking every bit like a wealthy European aristocrat rather than the most feared syndicate head on the American eastern seaboard. Over the past twelve months, he had systematically severed the Sokolov family's ties to street-level crime, transitioning their vast wealth entirely into green energy infrastructure, legitimate maritime shipping, and international venture capital.

He walked up the terrace steps, his blue eyes lighting up with unmasked affection the moment they found hers.

""You're late,"" Arya said, raising an eyebrow playfully as he approached her chair. ""The wine is getting warm.""

""Flight from London was delayed by fog at Heathrow,"" Nikolai replied smoothly. He leaned down, cupping her face in his hands, and kissed her deeply, savoring the taste of the warm Portuguese air on her lips. ""And I had to make a detour in Paris to pick up a special delivery.""

""Oh? More business manifests?""

Nikolai smiled, pulling out a heavy, velvet-lined mahogany box from his jacket pocket and placing it on the table before her.

Arya opened the box. Resting on the dark velvet was an antique silver wine key, exquisitely engraved with an intricate family crest combining the Vance and Sokolov emblems. Beside it sat a single, flawless pear-cut diamond ring that caught the Mediterranean sun and scattered rainbows across the terrace stone.

Arya stared at the ring, her breath catching in her throat. She looked up at Nikolai, who had dropped to one knee beside her chair, his gaze filled with a profound, unshakeable devotion.

""Fourteen months ago, a brilliant, terrifying woman walked into the Onyx Room with an apron and a bottle of Bordeaux,"" Nikolai said, his voice soft with emotion. ""She called me out on my arrogance in flawless Russian, saved my life twice, and taught me that power means nothing if you don't have someone extraordinary to share it with.""

He took her right hand—the hand with the hardened trigger finger that had once defended them both—and slipped the ring onto her finger. It fit with flawless precision.

""Aurelia Vance,"" he said, looking straight into her soul. ""Will you do me the great honor of sitting at my table for the rest of our lives? Not as an associate, not as a partner in crime, but as my wife?""

Tears of pure happiness welled in Arya’s eyes, bright and clear under the European sun. She threw her arms around his neck, pulling him into an embrace that banished the last lingering ghosts of Chicago, New York, and the blood-soaked past.

""Yes,"" she whispered fiercely against his ear, smiling as she kissed his jaw. ""On one condition.""

Nikolai laughed, holding her tightly against his chest. ""Name it.""

""You never, ever complain about my wine pouring again.""

""Deal,"" Nikolai murmured, burying his face in her hair as the ocean breeze carried the sound of their laughter out toward the endless blue horizon."
