Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The penthouse atop the Sokolov Tower in Hudson Yards was less like a home and more like an opulent fortress. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline, where neon lights danced against the dark expanse of the Hudson River. Inside, minimalist black marble floors and modern Italian furniture were offset by a heavy security detail stationed in every corridor.

A personal physician had already arrived, stitching up Roman's wounded forearm in the downstairs study before providing Arya with antiseptic wipes and fresh bandages for the scrapes on her knees and elbows.

Arya stood before the massive bathroom mirror, washing the dirt and grime from her face. She let down her severe hair knot, allowing her long, dark brown waves to tumble past her shoulders. In the guest bedroom, someone had laid out a wardrobe of designer clothes: tailored silk trousers, a cashmere sweater, and flat leather boots that allowed for swift movement. She dressed quickly, feeling the strange sensation of returning to the luxurious fabric of her former life after months in polyester server aprons.

When she walked into the penthouse's private library, Nikolai was sitting behind a massive glass desk, examining a series of satellite photographs displayed across several high-resolution monitors. He had showered and changed into a dark navy suit, looking as impeccably put-together as if the firefight at The Luminary had never occurred.

""Help yourself to the scotch,"" Nikolai said without looking up from the screen. ""Glenfiddich 30. Your father's favorite, if I recall the old shipment manifests.""

Arya walked to the crystal bar, poured herself two fingers of the golden liquid, and took a measured sip. The peat and oak burned warmly down her throat, settling the lingering tremors in her chest.

""How long have you known Arthur was involved in the hit?"" she asked, approaching the desk.

""Six months,"" Nikolai replied, rotating one of the monitors toward her. The screen displayed surveillance footage of a private airstrip in the Hamptons. A heavyset, balding man in an expensive camel-hair coat was seen stepping onto the tarmac, surrounded by four men in tactical attire. It was Arthur Vance. ""After my father died, I began auditing the family's joint ventures. I discovered that Viktor had transferred over forty million dollars into shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands under Arthur's control. Arthur was funneling our syndicate's capital into political campaigns, buying immunity from the Southern District of New York.""

Arya studied the frozen image of her uncle. Her jaw tightened until her teeth ached. ""He acted like a grieving brother at the memorial service. He stood by the empty casket and wept.""

""Arthur is an actor,"" Nikolai said, his voice hardening. ""Just as my father was a fool who thought he could control men like him. But Arthur made a fatal miscalculation. He assumed that once he eliminated Julian, the remaining keys to the overseas accounts would default to the surviving board members. He didn't know your father created a dead man's switch.""

""The ledger isn't just an account book, Nikolai,"" Arya said quietly, meeting his piercing blue eyes. ""It contains audio recordings, wiretap transcripts, and encrypted bank routing numbers implicating half the city council, two state senators, and Arthur’s private mercenary network. Julian kept receipts for every single bribe he ever paid on behalf of the syndicates.""

Nikolai leaned forward, genuine intrigue flashing across his aristocratic features. ""Where is the physical key?""

""A private depository vault on 44th Street,"" she said. ""Box 714. But getting into the vault requires three things: the physical key, my biometric fingerprint, and a sixteen-character passphrase that changes every twenty-four hours based on an algorithm Julian designed.""

""Do you know the algorithm?""

""I lived with him for twenty-two years,"" Arya said, a faint, bittersweet smile touching her lips. ""He made me solve algorithmic puzzles before he let me eat breakfast every Sunday. I can generate the code in my head.""

Nikolai stood up, walking around the desk until he was standing merely inches from her. The faint scent of cedarwood and bergamot enveloped her. He looked down at her face, his gaze lingering on her dark eyes, tracing the sharp line of her cheekbones.

""You are extraordinary, Aurelia,"" he murmured, his voice velvety and hypnotic. ""Most women in your position would have run to the authorities or crumbled under the weight of this world. Instead, you threw a steak knife through an assassin's neck and negotiated a fifty-percent cut of an empire.""

May you like

""I was raised by wolves, Mr. Sokolov,"" Arya countered, holding his gaze without flinching. ""I don't roll over and show my belly to other predators.""

""Good,"" Nikolai whispered, his hand gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from her forehead. His touch was surprisingly tender, completely at odds with his terrifying reputation. ""Because tomorrow morning, we walk straight into the lion's den. And I need you at your most lethal.""
