Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Vault

""Hello, Uncle Arthur,"" Arya said, her voice dropping into a chilling calm that surprised even herself. She did not raise her hands. She stood firmly in front of the open safety deposit box, shielding the carbon-fiber drive with her body.

Nikolai remained completely motionless beside her, his posture relaxed, his hands casually resting at his sides. To an outsider, he looked like a bored spectator at an opera, but Arya could see the coiled tension in his shoulders—he was waiting for the exact split-second to strike.

""You always were your father's favorite,"" Arthur sighed, adjusting his cashmere scarf. ""Julian was a sentimental fool. He thought he could hoard billions in dirty capital and use it to buy his precious little girl a clean life in Europe. But money like this doesn't wash off, Aurelia. It sticks to your skin like gasoline.""

""You blew him up for a payout,"" Arya said, her voice dripping with ice. ""You smiled at his dinner table, drank his wine, and then wired his car with military-grade C4. Did you even hesitate?""

Arthur scoffed, waving a dismissive hand. ""Julian was losing his nerve. He was talking about going to the Department of Justice. He was going to put us all in federal prison just so he could sleep at night! I did what was necessary to protect the business. And now, thanks to you, I don't even have to hire crackers to crack his cipher. You opened the box for me.""

Arthur nodded to the lead mercenary, a scarred man with cold, vacant eyes. ""Kill Sokolov first. Take the girl and the drive to the private hangar in New Jersey. We'll extract whatever passwords remain at our leisure.""

""You made one mistake, Arthur,"" Nikolai said, speaking for the first time. His voice was smooth, resonant, and entirely devoid of fear.

Arthur frowned, stepping back slightly behind his armed guards. ""And what mistake is that, boy?""

""You assumed Roman was waiting in the lobby.""

At that precise moment, a violent explosion rocked the reinforced ceiling of the vault corridor. A deafening roar shattered the silence as chunks of concrete and iron rebar rained down into the hallway behind Arthur's men. Through the hole blown in the ventilation duct above, three flashbang grenades tumbled onto the marble floor.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

A blinding white light and concussive sound waves tore through the narrow space. The mercenaries cried out, instinctively shielding their eyes and disoriented by the sensory overload.

Nikolai moved with terrifying, predatory speed. In a fraction of a second, his Sig Sauer cleared its holster. He fired two double-taps through the smoke; the two mercenaries flanking Arthur dropped instantly, neutralised before they could level their rifles.

Arya didn't hesitate. She grabbed the heavy steel security deposit box drawer from the wall and hurled it with vicious accuracy into the face of the third contractor who was blindly raising his weapon. The steel struck his jaw with a sickening crack, sending him sprawling to the ground. She lunged forward, snatching the fallen assault rifle from his hands and rolling behind the marble display pillar.

""Arthur is running!"" she screamed over the gunfire.

Arthur had already scrambled down the corridor, ditching his expensive scarf as he sprinted toward the freight elevators, leaving his last surviving mercenary to buy him time.

Nikolai fired a final shot through the smoke, dropping the last contractor in his tracks. He turned to Arya, his face illuminated by the flashing red emergency beacons.

""Go get him,"" Nikolai commanded, tossing her an extra magazine. ""I'll hold the lobby.""

Arya racked the bolt of the rifle, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated vengeance. ""He's mine.""
