Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of Crown Meridian

Three weeks later.

The grand lobby of Crown Meridian Health's flagship hospital was packed with over two hundred journalists, television camera crews, and medical staff. Microphones from every major news network clustered across the podium at the center of the stage.

I stood backstage, smoothing the fabric of a pristine navy-blue suit. My hair was styled elegantly, and pinned to my lapel was a gold caduceus pin—the very pin that had been stripped from me in disgrace seven years ago.

Beside me stood Luca DeSantis. He leaned slightly on an elegant, silver-topped walking cane, still recovering from the gunshot wound, but looking every bit the untouchable titan of industry. He wore a midnight-blue tailored suit, his posture straight, his presence commanding absolute silence from the security guards flanking the corridor.

Mateo stood just behind him, completely recovered, looking at me with profound gratitude.

""Are you ready for this?"" Luca asked softly, turning his dark eyes toward me.

""Seven years ago, I ran out of this building in tears while security escorted me into the snow,"" I replied, meeting his gaze evenly. ""I've been ready for this every single day of my life.""

""Remember, Mara,"" Luca said, a genuine, warm smile curving his lips—a smile he reserved only for me. ""You aren't asking for their permission anymore. You own this place.""

The Vance-DeSantis Trust had restructured Crown Meridian Health entirely. By utilizing the fifty-one percent controlling stake seized from Sterling, Luca had dissolved the predatory board of directors. The private inner-city clinics that Sterling had marked for demolition were not only preserved; they were granted an unprecedented fifty-million-dollar endowment for state-of-the-art trauma equipment, fully staffed emergency wings, and free healthcare programs for underprivileged families.

And as the majority trustee, Luca had appointed me as the Executive Director of Clinical Operations.

""Ladies and gentlemen,"" the public relations director announced to the roaring crowd outside. ""Please welcome the new Executive Director of Crown Meridian Health, Director Mara Ellison.""

I stepped out onto the stage.

The flashbulbs erupted in a blinding storm of light. Applause thundered through the marble atrium, led by dozens of nurses and doctors who had long suffered under Sterling’s corrupt administration.

I stepped up to the microphones, looking out over the sea of faces.

""Seven years ago, a catastrophic lie stole my voice, my reputation, and my calling,"" I began, my voice ringing clear and authoritative through the speakers. ""A system designed to heal became a machine driven by greed, willing to sacrifice patients and honest medical professionals to protect corporate profits. But today, that era ends.""

I paused, looking toward the side of the stage where Luca stood watching me, his eyes filled with quiet pride.

""From this day forward, Crown Meridian Health returns to its true purpose: saving lives without prejudice, without compromise, and without fear. The doors of our clinics will remain open to every single citizen of this city, regardless of their wealth or background. We will protect those who heal, and we will honor those who trust us with their lives.""

The room erupted into a standing ovation. Reporters shouted questions, but I didn't linger for the applause. I stepped away from the podium, walking straight past the cameras and back into the private corridor where Luca waited.

""You were magnificent,"" Luca murmured as I reached him.

May you like

""We made a good team,"" I smiled.

""We aren't just a team, Mara,"" Luca said, taking my hand in his and raising it gently to his lips. ""We are partners. In everything.""
