Chapter 3 - The Ghost of St. Jude

My breath hitched in my throat. The paper cup slipped from my numb fingers, splashing water across my blood-spattered shoes.
Arthur Vance had been Luca DeSantis’s uncle?
The memory rushed back like a tidal wave, drowning me in the terror of that night seven years ago. I remembered the chaos in the VIP surgical recovery suite. I remembered Dr. Julian Sterling bursting into the room, sweating profusely despite the freezing air conditioning, his eyes wide and manic. He had ordered me to step out to fetch an extra unit of albumin, and when I returned, Arthur Vance was already coding. Sterling had screamed at the team, pointing fingers, claiming I had hung a bag laced with potassium chloride instead of saline.
Within two hours, security had escorted me from the building. My locker had been cleaned out before I could even collect my stethoscope. Every lawyer I approached dropped my case within twenty-four hours after receiving a quiet phone call from the hospital’s board of trustees. Julian Sterling had erased me from medicine, turned me into a pariah, and condemned me to live in the shadows of this run-down neighborhood clinic.
The office door swung wide open.
Luca stood in the doorway, staring down at me. The harsh fluorescent light cast deep shadows beneath his cheekbones. He walked toward me, his heavy leather boots clicking rhythmically against the blood-stained tiles. He stopped two feet away, looking down at me not with pity, but with a terrifying, purposeful intensity.
""You heard,"" Luca said. It was a statement, not an inquiry.
I swallowed hard, forcing myself to look straight into his dark eyes. I refused to cower. I had lost everything years ago; I had nothing left for him to take.
""I heard,"" I replied, my voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins. ""I didn't kill your uncle. I tried to push the crash cart in, but Sterling locked me out of the suite until the code team arrived. By then, the monitor was already flat.""
""I know,"" Luca said simply.
""You know?"" A bitter laugh escaped my lips. ""If you knew, why did you let them drag my name through the mud? Why did you let them strip my license, ruin my family, and force me to work in this roach-infested clinic for minimum wage?""
""Because seven years ago, I was twenty-four, fighting a civil war within my own family for control of the DeSantis syndicate,"" Luca explained, his voice devoid of emotion. ""My uncle Arthur was my only protector. When he died, the Morettis attempted to wipe us out. It took me five years of bloodshed and political warfare to eliminate them and claim Baltimore. By the time I took total control, your trial was over, the records were sealed, and the trail was cold. I believed the official report—until tonight.""
He stepped closer, crouching down until his eyes were level with mine. The scent of expensive cologne, cedarwood, and smoke clung to him, overpowering the smell of antiseptic.
""Tonight, I watched you work,"" Luca continued softly. ""A woman who panics, a woman who is incompetent, does not order a mafia boss to his knees. She does not crack a central line in four seconds under emergency lighting. She does not break a corporate seal and risk prison to save a stranger whose life means nothing to her.""
He reached out, his gloved thumb gently wiping a smear of dried blood from my cheekbone. The gesture was shockingly tender for a man whose name terrified the entire eastern seaboard.
""Dr. Julian Sterling stole seven years of your life, Mara,"" Luca whispered. ""And he used my uncle’s blood to buy his empire. He runs Crown Meridian Health now. He thinks he is untouchable. He thinks money and political connections can protect him from God.""
Luca stood up, offering me his bare, outstretched hand.
""The storm has stopped outside,"" he said. ""At eight o'clock this morning, Sterling will arrive at his executive suite at Crown Meridian headquarters. He is going to fire you, and he is going to have you arrested for grand theft of medical supplies. Unless you come with me.""
I stared at his hand. The skin of his knuckles was scarred, bearing the marks of a brutal life. If I walked out that door with him, there would be no turning back. I would be aligning myself with a criminal, stepping into a world of violence and shadows.

""And if I come with you?"" I asked. ""What happens then?""
Luca’s lips curved into a cold, lethal smile. ""Then we don't just clear your name, Mara. We take his entire empire away.""
