Chapter 4 - The Lion's Den

The penthouse atop the DeSantis Tower on the harbor was a fortress of glass, steel, and dark Italian marble. By 6:00 a.m., the city below was beginning to wake, buried beneath a blanket of pristine white snow that masked the grime of the streets.

I stood in the expansive bathroom, staring at my reflection in the massive mirror. Luca had provided me with fresh clothes—a charcoal cashmere sweater and tailored dark slacks that fit me surprisingly well. I washed the blood from my face and scrubbed under my fingernails until my skin was raw. When I looked into my own eyes, I didn't see the broken, defeated woman who had unlocked the clinic doors yesterday morning. There was a spark of something dangerous rekindling in my chest.

When I stepped into the dining area, Luca was already seated at a polished mahogany table, reading through several financial reports on an iPad. He had showered, shaved, and was dressed in an immaculate bespoke three-piece suit. Only the subtle tightness around his jaw revealed that he hadn't slept in over twenty-four hours.

""Mateo survived the surgery,"" Luca said without looking up. ""The trauma team removed the bullet from his liver. He’s resting in our private medical facility downstairs. The doctor says if you hadn't placed that central line and decompressed his pericardium, he would have suffered irreversible brain death before the ambulance arrived.""

""He was lucky,"" I said, pulling out a chair and sitting opposite him.

""There was no luck involved. There was only you."" Luca set the tablet down and looked at me across the table. ""While you were changing, my men intercepted a communication from Crown Meridian Health's legal department. Julian Sterling has already been notified of the broken seal at your clinic.""

My stomach tightened instinctively. ""Did he call the police?""

""Worse,"" Luca said, a grim smirk playing on his lips. ""He called the District Attorney's office directly. He wants an expedited warrant for grand larceny of narcotics and controlled devices. He wants to ensure you are locked away in a state penitentiary before you can speak to a single reporter about the conditions in that clinic.""

""He knows,"" I realized, a wave of cold clarity washing over me. ""He knows that if I get backed into a corner, I might start digging into Arthur Vance’s death again. He wants me silenced permanently.""

""Sterling is arrogant, but he isn't stupid,"" Luca agreed. ""He built Crown Meridian by acquiring failing municipal clinics, gutting their emergency equipment to cut operating costs, and funneling the profits into his private pharmaceutical research ventures. The clinic you worked at was never meant to save lives; it was a tax write-off designed to fail so he could sell the land to condominium developers next spring.""

""That's monstrous,"" I breathed. ""People in that neighborhood rely on that clinic! Where are they supposed to go?""

""To Sterling, human beings are simply numbers on a balance sheet,"" Luca replied, his voice turning icy. ""Just as my uncle was merely a barrier to a ten-million-dollar payoff. But Sterling made a critical error.""

""What error?""

""He doesn't know you saved Mateo,"" Luca said, leaning forward. ""He thinks you are a friendless, broke, disgraced former nurse with no money for an attorney. He doesn't know that the man who controls Baltimore’s ports, its construction unions, and its private financial networks is standing behind you.""

The elevator doors at the end of the foyer chimed. Marco stepped out, carrying an encrypted laptop and a thick leather briefcase.

""Boss,"" Marco said, nodding respectfully toward me before turning to Luca. ""The board of directors meeting for Crown Meridian Health is scheduled for ten this morning at the Harborview Plaza. Sterling called an emergency session to approve the buyout of Vance Logistics' remaining maritime shipping contracts.""

Luca’s eyes flashed with predatory delight. ""He thinks he's going to swallow my family's legacy today.""

""What are we going to do?"" I asked, looking between the two men.

Luca stood up, buttoning his jacket with slow, deliberate precision. ""We are going to crash a board meeting, Mara. And you are going to hand Dr. Julian Sterling his termination notice.""
