Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

The silent video played across the massive screen, casting a cold blue glow over the stunned faces of the board members.
On the screen, a younger Julian Sterling could be seen pacing nervously beside Arthur Vance’s bed. The digital timestamp in the corner read 2:14 a.m. The video clearly showed Sterling checking his watch, glancing toward the hallway door, and then pulling a pre-filled syringe from his personal lab coat pocket. He injected the substance directly into the IV line running into Arthur Vance’s arm.
Two minutes later, the monitors began to flash. The footage captured Sterling quickly swapping out the secondary IV bag on the pole, replacing it with a bag clearly labeled Potassium Chloride - High Risk.
Then, the door opened. A twenty-four-year-old Mara Ellison walked into the room carrying a medical tray.
The video captured Sterling immediately backing away, shouting, and dramatically pointing at the altered IV bag. The camera recorded my horrified expression as I dropped the tray and desperately began chest compressions on Arthur Vance.
The room was dead silent. You could hear the faint hum of the HVAC system and the ragged breathing of Dr. Julian Sterling.
""You told the medical board that Nurse Ellison hung that potassium bag while you were in the scrub room,"" an elderly board member, a retired federal judge, said, his voice trembling with outrage. ""You swore under oath, Julian!""
""It's a deepfake!"" Sterling shrieked, his voice cracking into hysteria. ""DeSantis fabricated it! He’s a criminal! You can’t believe this!""
""Marco, play the audio transcript from the Cayman National Bank transfer,"" Luca ordered calmly.
A digitized audio recording filled the room. A Swiss banker’s voice confirmed a ten-million-dollar wire transfer into an account owned by 'Aegis Holding Corp'—a shell company whose sole beneficiary was registered as Dr. Julian Sterling. The memo on the wire transfer, originated by Don Carmine Moretti, read: Contract fulfilled. Vance terminated.
""Arthur Vance was recovering perfectly from his triple bypass,"" I spoke up, my voice cutting through the panic like a scalpel. I stood up from my chair, looking directly into Sterling’s terrified eyes. ""You couldn't let him wake up, could you, Julian? Because Arthur had discovered that you were embezzling funds from the hospital's pension pool to fund Moretti’s drug distribution network. If he woke up, you were going to federal prison. So you took Moretti's money, killed your own patient, and blamed the twenty-four-year-old nurse who trusted you.""
Sterling stumbled backward, his back hitting the glass presentation screen. ""You have no proof that account is mine! Any lawyer will tear this apart in court! You have nothing!""
""I don't need a court, Julian,"" Luca said, stepping around the table with predatory grace. ""In my world, justice isn't decided by twelve strangers who can be bribed or intimidated. In my world, blood pays for blood.""
Luca reached into his jacket. The board members recoiled, expecting a weapon.
Instead, Luca pulled out a single sheet of paper and slapped it onto the mahogany table directly in front of Sterling.
""What... what is this?"" Sterling stammered, staring at the document.
""It’s an unconditional surrender,"" Luca said. ""You will sign over your entire fifty-one percent controlling stake in Crown Meridian Health to the Vance-DeSantis Trust. You will sign a full, sworn confession detailing your malpractice, the murder of Arthur Vance, and the deliberate framing of Mara Ellison. And you will deliver that confession to the state medical board within the hour.""
Sterling looked up, a manic, desperate defiance flaring in his eyes. ""And if I refuse? You won't kill me here, DeSantis! Not in front of all these witnesses! You wouldn't dare!""
May you like
Luca leaned down until his mouth was inches from Sterling’s ear.
""If you sign,"" Luca whispered loud enough for only Sterling and me to hear, ""you spend the rest of your pathetic life in a federal penitentiary where my men will ensure you survive every single day of your sentence. If you refuse to sign, I will have you walked out of this building, driven to the harbor, and dropped into the freezing bay through a hole in the ice. And your board of directors will testify that you jumped out of guilt. Sign the paper, Julian.""
