Chapter 5 - An Offer He Cannot Refuse

The corporate boardroom on the forty-second floor of Harborview Plaza smelled of expensive leather, polished mahogany, and unearned privilege. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the frozen Chesapeake Bay. Around the oval table sat twelve of the wealthiest investors in Maryland—hedge fund managers, retired politicians, and healthcare magnates.
At the head of the table sat Dr. Julian Sterling.
At fifty-four, Sterling looked immaculate. His silver hair was perfectly coiffed, his skin tanned from a recent trip to the Caribbean, and his smile radiated the practiced warmth of a man who sold salvation while dealing in poison. He was in the middle of a PowerPoint presentation, gesturing toward a chart showing Crown Meridian's projected fourth-quarter earnings.
""By liquidating the underperforming inner-city clinics,"" Sterling was saying smoothly, ""we can reallocate forty million dollars into our proprietary biotech portfolio. Furthermore, with the acquisition of the Vance shipping hubs, our supply chain costs will drop by thirty-four percent—""
The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with a concussive bang that shook the glass walls.
Two armed private security guards stationed at the entrance were shoved backward into the room, sprawling across the plush carpet. Before anyone could shout, Marco and four DeSantis enforcers fanned out along the perimeter of the room, their hands resting noticeably inside their tailored overcoats.
A collective gasp echoed through the room. Board members scrambled back in their leather chairs, their faces turning pale.
""What is the meaning of this?!"" Sterling roared, slamming his hands onto the table. ""Security! Call the police immediately!""
""The police are currently dealing with a massive blizzard traffic gridlock, Julian,"" a smooth, baritone voice echoed from the doorway. ""And besides, the chief of police answers to me. Not to you.""
Luca DeSantis walked into the boardroom. His stride was slow, arrogant, and entirely commanding. Every eye in the room locked onto him in sheer terror. These billionaires knew exactly who Luca was; they dined in the same exclusive clubs, but they operated in the sunlight while Luca ruled the shadows.
And right beside Luca, dressed in sharp black tailoring, her chin held high, walked me.
Sterling’s eyes shifted from Luca to my face. For a fraction of a second, his polished facade cracked. His pupils dilated in sheer shock.
""Mara?"" Sterling stammered, his voice losing its authoritative edge. ""What... what is she doing here? DeSantis, this is a private corporate meeting! You can't just storm in here with armed thugs!""
""I own thirty-two percent of Crown Meridian stock through various offshore holding entities, Julian,"" Luca said, pulling out the empty leather chair at the foot of the table and gesturing for me to sit down. I took the seat calmly, folding my hands on the polished wood.
Luca remained standing behind me, his hands resting lightly on the high back of my chair, staking his claim.
""Technically,"" Luca continued, ""this makes me your second-largest shareholder. Which gives me every right to attend an emergency meeting. Especially one where we discuss gross corporate fraud, medical malpractice, and the murder of Arthur Vance.""
The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. Several board members looked nervously at one another.
""Murder?!"" Sterling scoffed, though a bead of sweat was now clearly forming along his hairline. ""Arthur Vance died of sudden post-operative cardiac arrest! It was thoroughly investigated! And as for this woman—"" He pointed an accusing, trembling finger at me. ""Mara Ellison was fired for lethal negligence! She is a disgraced felon who broke into my clinic last night and stole controlled substances! I have an active warrant being drawn up for her arrest as we speak!""
""Show them the monitor, Marco,"" Luca commanded softly.
Marco stepped forward, plugged an encrypted flash drive into the conference room's main projector hub, and tapped a key.
The glowing projection of Crown Meridian's profit margins vanished. In its place appeared a high-resolution video file dated seven years ago: the private surgical recovery suite of St. Jude Memorial Hospital.

Sterling’s breath hitched audibly. ""Where... where did you get that? That footage was destroyed!""
""Nothing in this city is ever truly destroyed, Julian,"" Luca whispered. ""It just gets sold to the highest bidder.""
