Chapter 2 - The Name on the File

By 3:30 a.m., the sound of distant sirens finally cut through the howling wind. Three private ambulances, unmarked and heavily armored—clearly not part of the city's municipal fleet—pulled up behind Luca’s snow-covered SUVs. Efficient men in tactical gear moved quickly, loading the wounded onto stretchers. Mateo was carefully intubated and secured in the lead vehicle under the supervision of a private physician Luca had summoned.

The clinic was suddenly quiet again, left in a state of utter ruin. Red footprints covered the floor tiles, discarded gauze littered the corners, and the red security seal hung like a bloody ribbon from the trauma room door. I sat on an overturned plastic crate in the hallway, clutching a paper cup of lukewarm water, shivering from exhaustion and the bitter draft sneaking through the entryway.

The door to the back office stood slightly ajar. I heard low, urgent voices speaking inside.

""Boss, we swept the building's network to ensure no silent alarm went off when she broke the seal,"" a voice said. It was Marco, Luca's chief of security, a barrel-chested man with a jagged scar cutting across his left ear. ""The alarm was bypassed locally, but the clinic's digital logs recorded her staff ID. Crown Meridian will know by sunrise.""

""I told her I would handle Crown Meridian,"" Luca answered smoothly.

""That might be harder than you think, boss. Look at what came up when I ran her background check.""

I froze, holding the paper cup halfway to my mouth.

Paper rustled inside the room. Through the crack in the door, I saw Luca standing under the flickering fluorescent bulb, holding a thick manila folder. The glow illuminated the sharp angles of his jaw and the cold calculation in his dark eyes.

""Mara Ellison,"" Luca read aloud, his voice dropping into that chilling, quiet register. ""Seven years ago, she was the head trauma specialist nurse at St. Jude Memorial. Fast-tracked for clinical directorship. Cleared over four hundred critical resuscitation procedures with a ninety-eight percent survival rate."" He paused, flipping a page. ""Terminated under federal investigation for gross negligence and wrongful death. Accused of administering a lethal dose of potassium chloride to a VIP patient. License revoked. Blacklisted from every hospital in North America.""

A sharp, familiar pain stabbed through my chest. Hearing my life summarized in three cold sentences made the blood drain from my face. They hadn’t mentioned that the orders had been altered in the digital system. They hadn’t mentioned that the security footage from the pharmacy wing had conveniently vanished that night. They hadn’t mentioned that I was merely the convenient pawn thrown under the bus to protect someone far more powerful.

""Who was the patient?"" Luca asked.

""Arthur Vance,"" Marco replied. ""Chairman of Vance Logistics. But that’s not the real issue, Luca. Look at who conducted the internal review. Look at who signed the final termination and criminal referral that destroyed her.""

There was an agonizing silence. Through the gap, I watched Luca’s eyes scan the bottom of the document. Suddenly, his posture changed. His shoulders locked tight. The cold indifference that usually masked his face vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated venom. The sheer rage radiating from him was palpable, filling the small office like an electric charge.

""Arthur Vance died of a cardiac arrest,"" Luca said, his voice dropping so low it sounded like grinding stones. ""And Dr. Julian Sterling signed the order to bury her.""

""Yes, Boss,"" Marco said quietly, shifting uncomfortably. ""Sterling was the chief of surgery back then. Now he’s the CEO of Crown Meridian Health. He owns this clinic. And he controls the medical board.""

""Julian Sterling didn't just sign this,"" Luca whispered, his fingers tightening until the thick paper crinkled in his grip. ""He framed her. He killed Vance with an improper dosage during bypass surgery, panicked, and altered the electronic medical records to pin the potassium slip on the nurse on duty.""

""How do you know that for sure?"" Marco asked.

Luca tossed the file onto the metal desk and looked directly toward the door where I was sitting. ""Because Arthur Vance was my maternal uncle. And Julian Sterling was paid ten million dollars that very night by the Moretti family to make sure my uncle never woke up from that table.""
