Chapter 9 - The Healer’s Touch

By dawn, the fog had burned off, revealing a crisp, clear autumn morning over the rocky coast of Black Harbor.
Inside the master suite of the estate, the only sound was the crackle of pine logs in the wide stone fireplace.
Adrian sat on the edge of the leather sofa, his shirt unbuttoned to reveal a shallow graze along his left shoulder where a ricochet bullet had torn through his skin.
I sat beside him with a bowl of warm antiseptic water, a clean cotton cloth, and surgical bandages.
"Hold still," I whispered, gently cleaning the dried blood from his shoulder.
"You're very bossy for someone who was terrified of me four days ago," Adrian chuckled softly, though a grimace of pain touched his lips as the antiseptic stung.
"I was terrified of the man with the gun," I answered honestly, applying a clean gauze pad and taping it firmly in place.
"I'm not terrified of the man who threw himself over me to stop a bullet."
Adrian looked at me, his dark eyes softening until all the cold ruthlessness of the Harbor King completely melted away.
He reached up, catching my hand in his, bringing my fingers to his lips and kissing them one by one.
"I spent ten years building this fortress," Adrian confessed quietly, his voice thick with raw vulnerability.
"Surrounding myself with guards, stone walls, and loyalty bought with gold. I thought that was what made a man safe."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy velvet jeweler's box, placing it in my lap.
I looked at the box, my breath hitching in my chest.
"Open it, Isla," he whispered.
I opened the box with trembling fingers.
Inside rested an extraordinary, antique platinum ring set with a deep blue sapphire surrounded by a halo of brilliant diamonds, gleaming like the ocean beneath the morning sun.
"My grandmother gave this to my grandfather when they built the first commercial slip in this harbor," Adrian said softly.
"It belongs to the woman who stands beside the master of this house. Not behind him. Not as a servant. As his equal."
Tears welled in my eyes, spilling over my cheeks as I looked up into his eyes.
"Adrian... I came here with nothing. Just a broken family and a father's debt."
"You came here with the bravest heart I have ever known," he corrected, gently sliding the heavy ring onto my left finger.

"Will you stay with me, Isla? Not as my employee, but as my wife?"
"Yes," I breathed, throwing my arms around his neck and pulling him into a kiss that sealed our souls together forever.
