Chapter 7 - Ambush on the Cliff Road

We left the summit under a heavy coastal fog that rolled off the Atlantic like a shroud of gray wool.
Our three-car convoy wound its way up the narrow, winding cliff road leading back to the Black Harbor estate.
Inside the armored SUV, the silence was thick with adrenaline and unsaid words.
"You knew about the manifests before Mason pushed me?" I asked, looking at Adrian's strong, shadowed profile.
"I suspected Julian was moving unauthorized cargo," Adrian admitted, turning to look at me with genuine remorse in his eyes.
"I didn't know Mason would be reckless enough to show up at my home. If I had known, Isla... I would have never let you walk into that courtyard alone."
"You risked an entire war with your family today," I whispered, reaching out to touch his sleeve.
"For me. Why?"
Before Adrian could answer, the lead SUV in our convoy exploded into a violent ball of orange fire.
The shockwave slammed into our vehicle, the driver fighting desperately to keep the heavy armored car from plunging off the rocky cliff edge.
"Ambush!" Dante shouted through the front partition, drawing his weapon as automatic gunfire hammered against the bulletproof glass.
Tires screeched behind us as two unmarked black trucks blocked our retreat, sealing us on the narrow ledge between the mountain wall and the roaring ocean below.
"Get down!" Adrian roared, throwing his massive body over mine and pinning me to the floorboards.
Bullets sprayed the exterior like hail on tin, spiderwebbing the reinforced windows.
Mason Vale stepped out from behind the lead truck, holding a high-caliber assault rifle, his face twisted in psychotic, vengeful rage.

"Come out, Adrian!" Mason screamed over the howling storm.
"You took my ports! You took my name! Now you die on this road with your little housemaid!"
