Chapter 1 - The Bloodline Line in the Sand

Adrian's hand rested on the black desk phone, his silver signet ring catching the pale morning light through rain-streaked glass.
His eyes never left my face, burning with a calm, lethal fury that was far more terrifying than raised voices or shattered furniture.
"I don't hurt men for offending my pride, Isla," Adrian said, his deep baritone cutting through the low rumble of thunder over Black Harbor.
"I break men who threaten what belongs under my roof. And from the moment you signed your employment contract, your safety became my responsibility."
He picked up the receiver and dialed a single digit.
"Dante," Adrian commanded without preamble. "Bring my cousin Mason to the lower cellar. Now."
"Mr. Vale, please!" I gasped, taking a desperate step forward and forgetting my terror for just a moment.
"Mason is your blood. His father controls half the freight terminals in South Boston. If you touch him over a maid's bruised cheek, it will ignite an all-out war across the docks!"
Adrian slowly set the phone down on its cradle, rounding the mahogany desk with silent, predatory grace.
He stopped less than a foot from me, towering over my trembling frame, his dark eyes searching the purple swelling along my cheekbone.
"Mason's father has spent ten years mistaking my patience for weakness," Adrian murmured, his voice deadly and quiet.
"He thinks his family connection shields him from the law of this coast. Today, he learns that no bloodline outweighs an unforgivable transgression."
He reached out, his knuckles brushing the air just a millimeter from my cheek, stopping before he touched my bruised skin.
"Did he touch you anywhere else?" Adrian asked, the question vibrating with dangerous tension.
"No," I whispered, the lump in my throat almost choking me. "I pushed him off and ran into the kitchen."
Adrian nodded slowly, stepping back and pulling his tailored charcoal suit jacket straight.
"Follow me, Isla."
May you like
"Where?"
"To see how a true king deals with rotten branches on his family tree."
