Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

The east wing suite of the Vale mansion looked out over the jagged cliffs of Black Harbor.
It was larger than my family’s entire apartment in South Boston, furnished with antique mahogany, soft wool rugs, and a marble fireplace that crackled day and night.
A high-end physician arrived within an hour of my relocation, applying specialized soothing balms to my face and prescribing pain relief without asking a single question.
Two days later, my brother Caleb was brought to the estate in a private armored sedan.
He rushed through the double doors, his eyes wide with shock as he saw me sitting in a cream cashmere sweater by the fire.
"Isla! What is going on?!" Caleb demanded, dropping his duffel bag onto the rug.
"A town car pulled up to my campus housing, and two huge guys told me my tuition was covered for all four years and drove me here! Are you in trouble?"
I stood up and wrapped my arms around him, burying my face in his shoulder as tears of overwhelming relief finally spilled over.
"We're safe, Caleb. The debt is gone. Dad's collectors will never knock on our door again."
"Who cleared it?" he asked, pulling back to look at the healing yellow bruise on my cheek.
"Did the guy who owns this place do that to your face?!"
"No," a quiet, commanding voice answered from the doorway.
Adrian stood framed in the archway, dressed in a simple black sweater and dark trousers, hands in his pockets.
He didn't carry weapons, but the sheer aura of lethal authority radiating from him made Caleb step instinctively between us.
"I'm Adrian Vale," he said, nodding respectfully toward my younger brother.
"And the man who gave your sister that mark was put on a boat and permanently exiled from this coast."
Caleb swallowed hard, recognizing the name that made every street boss in Massachusetts lower their voice in fear.
"Why are you helping us, Mr. Vale?" Caleb asked, holding his ground with impressive courage for a nineteen-year-old.

"Because your sister has protected you with everything she had for two years," Adrian answered, looking directly at me.
"And I admire loyalty above all other virtues. You are safe here, Caleb. But tomorrow, your sister and I must attend a gathering that will decide the fate of this territory."
