Chapter 8 - The Price of Silence

By late afternoon, the news had sent shockwaves across global financial markets. Cable news networks broadcasted live footage from Carter International Airport under flashing banners: BILLIONAIRE FOILS OWN ASSASSINATION PLOT IN UNDERCOVER STUNT.

Carter Aviation Group stock, which had briefly tumbled in early trading when rumors of an emergency board meeting leaked, skyrocketed by thirty-two percent as investors realized that Daniel Carter had personally eradicated internal corruption and protected the company’s unblemished safety record.

In the executive penthouse overlooking the Denver skyline, Daniel stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, now dressed in a clean linen shirt and tailored trousers, though he had deliberately left his three-day stubble untouched.

A knock sounded at the mahogany double doors. Marcus Vance entered, carrying a leather dossier.

""Victor’s offshore accounts have been completely frozen by Swiss authorities,"" Marcus reported, placing the file on the desk. ""His co-conspirators in the maintenance division are already singing to federal prosecutors in exchange for plea bargains. The Swiss fund that tried to short our stock has collapsed, and their assets are being liquidated to cover liabilities.""

""And Chloe?"" Daniel asked, his voice softening with paternal concern. ""Has anyone spoken to my daughter?""

""She’s at the private estate in Aspen,"" Marcus replied gently. ""She was shaken when she heard Victor was behind it. He was like an uncle to her. But she’s safe, and she’s immensely proud of you.""

Daniel stared out at the distant Rocky Mountains, where the afternoon sun was casting long golden shadows across the snowcaps. ""It’s amazing how a man can spend twenty years building an empire, only to realize the biggest threat was sitting at his right hand the entire time.""

""What about the flight attendant?"" Marcus asked. ""Maya Bennett. She’s waiting in the conference room. She turned down every media interview downstairs, despite major networks offering six-figure sums for an exclusive.""

Daniel smiled faintly. ""Integrity isn't for sale, Marcus. Bring her in.""

A moment later, Maya walked into the office. She looked rested, but her expression remained guarded, as if she were still bracing for some unseen consequence of speaking out.

""Please, have a seat, Maya,"" Daniel said, gesturing to the leather armchairs.

Maya sat down, placing her hands neatly in her lap. ""Mr. Carter, I came to ask if I’ll be reassigned to a different base. With everything that happened, I don't think I can walk past Hangar Seven without reliving that nightmare.""

Daniel leaned back against his desk and looked at her with profound respect. ""Maya, you aren't going to be walking past maintenance hangars anymore—unless you’re inspecting them.""
