Chapter 5 - The Showdown at Gate 12

Upstairs at Gate 12, the boarding line was already moving. Passengers were scanning their digital boarding passes against the electronic turnstiles. Captain Robert Sterling, a veteran pilot with thirty years of commercial experience, stood near the door of the jet bridge conferring with the gate agent.

Suddenly, the side security door from the tarmac stairs burst open.

Gate Agent Linda Marsh looked up, startled, as the scruffily dressed man who had visited Counter Five earlier marched onto the carpeted gate area, accompanied by Maya Bennett and Frank Miller.

""Excuse me, sir!"" Linda called out sharply, reaching for the security alarm. ""You cannot be back here! TSA! Security!""

Tom Bradley, the young security guard from the employee entrance, came sprinting around the corner with his baton drawn. ""Hey! I warned you earlier, buddy! Put your hands where I can see them!""

Captain Sterling turned around, annoyed by the commotion. ""What is the meaning of this? We are in the middle of passenger boarding!""

Daniel didn't flinch. He walked straight past the security officer and stopped three inches from Captain Sterling. With a smooth, deliberate motion, Daniel pulled off his baseball cap, wiped the dust from his forehead, and looked the captain directly in the eye.

Captain Sterling’s jaw dropped. The clipboard in his hands slipped half an inch. ""Mr... Mr. Carter?""

""Captain Sterling,"" Daniel said in a voice that carried across the entire waiting lounge, causing dozens of passengers to freeze in their tracks. ""Order an immediate evacuation of the jet bridge and shut down ground power to this aircraft immediately. Flight 417 is grounded by direct order of the Chairman.""

Tom Bradley skidded to a halt, his baton lowering awkwardly as his eyes darted from the disheveled man to the giant corporate portrait of Daniel Carter hanging on the terminal wall thirty feet away. The resemblance was undeniable.

""Grounded?"" Sterling stammered. ""Sir, we have full clearance from the executive office. Victor Hale signed off on our dispatch packet personally ten minutes ago!""

""Victor Hale signed a death warrant for everyone on board this plane,"" Daniel said loudly, turning toward the stunned crowd of passengers. ""There is a catastrophic fracture in the high-pressure fuel assembly of the port engine. If this aircraft had reached rotation speed, both engines would have suffered total fuel starvation before reaching ten thousand feet.""

A collective gasp echoed through the terminal. A mother holding her toddler pulled the child close to her chest. Murmurs of shock and panic rippled through the line.

""Linda,"" Daniel commanded, turning to the trembling gate agent who had reassigned his seat. ""Lock the gate doors. Keep all passengers in the terminal and issue full hotel and meal vouchers on my personal executive account. Captain Sterling, escort Frank to the cockpit and secure the digital black box logs before anyone can initiate a remote system purge.""

Just then, Daniel’s phone rang. It was an incoming video call from the executive boardroom on the fourth floor of the terminal.

The screen lit up with the face of Victor Hale, immaculate in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, sitting at the head of the mahogany conference table with eight board members around him.
