Chapter 7 - The Net Closes

Victor Hale scrambled back from the conference table, his chair toppling backward onto the carpet. ""Security! Clear the executive wing!"" he screamed, but nobody moved. The corporate security guards stationed at the boardroom doors crossed their arms and stood firmly in place; Marcus Vance had already revoked Victor’s administrative credentials five minutes earlier.
Up on the fourth floor, the double glass doors of the executive suite were thrown open. Six armed federal marshals accompanied by agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation entered the room with warrants in hand.
""Victor Hale,"" the lead agent announced, flashing his badge. ""You are under arrest for attempted murder, corporate sabotage, securities fraud, and federal wire fraud. Place your hands behind your back.""
Victor lunged toward the private balcony exit, but two agents tackled him to the floor, pinning his arms behind his back and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists. The heavy gold ring with the blue eagle emblem scraped against the polished mahogany floor before being bagged as criminal evidence.
Down at Gate 12, a deafening silence settled over the terminal as Daniel lowered his phone.
Then, slowly, someone in the crowd began to clap. Within seconds, the entire concourse erupted into thunderous applause and cheers. Passengers who had just been inches away from boarding a doomed aircraft were crying, embracing their family members, and shaking Daniel’s hand.
Linda Marsh wiped tears from her eyes as she came around the counter. ""Mr. Carter... I don't know what to say. When I checked you in, I was so dismissive of your clothes...""
""You did your job, Linda,"" Daniel said with a warm, reassuring smile. ""You followed protocol and you were professional. That’s what keeps this airport running.""
He turned to Tom Bradley, who was standing frozen in shock, looking down at his own shoes in profound shame. ""Officer Bradley.""
""Sir... Mr. Carter, I’m so sorry,"" the young guard stammered, his face burning bright red. ""I had no idea who you were. I treated you like a trespasser.""
Daniel placed a heavy, reassuring hand on Tom’s shoulder. ""You stopped a man who didn't look like he belonged in an employee-only area. You didn't bend the rules just because I acted confident. That vigilance saved this terminal today. Report to human resources tomorrow morning; you’re being promoted to the terminal security management team.""
Tom’s eyes widened with utter disbelief and gratitude. ""Thank you, sir! Thank you so much!""
Daniel then turned to Frank Miller, whose shoulders had finally stopped trembling. ""Frank, you made a mistake out of fear for your family, but when it counted most, you kept the truth safe. You will cooperate fully with the federal investigators, and your family will be placed under twenty-four-hour private security protection at my expense. When this is over, your pension remains untouched.""

Frank broke down, clasping Daniel’s hand in silent, tearful thanks.
Finally, Daniel turned to Maya Bennett. She was standing quietly near the window, looking out at the grounded aircraft that was now surrounded by safety inspectors.
