Chapter 2 - The Grounding Order

The digital clock mounted over the gate monitors blinked 10:24 AM. Boarding for Flight 417 was scheduled to commence in less than twenty minutes. Out in the polished expanse of Terminal B, two hundred and six passengers were gathering their carry-ons, sipping coffee, and laughing over phone calls, completely unaware that they were pawns in an attempted corporate execution.

Daniel pulled his personal satellite phone from a deep interior pocket—a secure, encrypted device completely off the Carter Aviation corporate intranet. His thumb hovered over the emergency contact for Federal Aviation Administration dispatch, but he paused. If he triggered an immediate public grounding through official channels without physical proof, Victor’s legal team would immediately wipe the digital servers, claim a routine clerical miscommunication, and sacrifice a low-level mechanic as a scapegoat. Daniel needed unassailable, irrefutable evidence.

""Maya, where did they take the original red-tagged maintenance log?"" Daniel asked, his eyes burning with lethal focus.

""Hangar Seven,"" she replied, swallowing hard. ""The head of hangar maintenance, Frank Miller, was arguing with Victor. Frank kept saying that the turbine pressure seals were degraded beyond allowable tolerances. Victor told him that if the plane didn't leave the gate on schedule, Frank’s pension would evaporate and he’d never work in commercial aviation again.""

""Frank Miller has been with my family since my father ran twin-engine props out of a gravel strip,"" Daniel murmured. ""If Frank caved, Victor must have backed him into an impossible corner. Come with me.""

""Mr. Carter, if my supervisor sees me abandoning my gate assignment—""

""Maya, your supervisor answers to the regional director, who answers to the executive board, which answers to me,"" Daniel said with absolute authority. ""From this moment forward, you report directly to the Chairman of the Board. You just saved my life, and I am not leaving you behind to face Victor's wrath.""

Daniel led her down a secure stairwell marked AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY. When he touched his titanium executive keycard to the biometric reader, the heavy steel door clicked unlocked instantly, granting them access to the lower subterranean transit tunnel that connected the main terminal to the massive maintenance hangars.

As they walked rapidly through the dimly lit service corridor, Daniel dialed a trusted private investigator named Marcus Vance, a former intelligence operative who managed Daniel’s personal security details outside corporate channels.

""Marcus,"" Daniel spoke into the receiver without greeting. ""Victor has gone rogue. He’s attempting an engineered catastrophic failure on Flight 417. I need you to place an immediate surveillance tap on all outbound financial transfers from Carter Aviation executive escrow accounts over the past seventy-two hours. Look for offshore shell companies, specifically in Zurich and the Cayman Islands.""

""Daniel? Where are you?"" Marcus’s voice crackled through the secure line with urgent alarm. ""I’ve been trying to reach your private office for two hours! Victor called an emergency executive committee meeting for twelve-thirty today. He told the board you were off-grid on a private retreat and that he was invoking emergency power-of-attorney clauses due to your sudden unavailability!""

""He's preparing for my funeral before the plane has even left the runway,"" Daniel hissed between clenched teeth. ""Lock down the remote server mirrors. I’m heading into Hangar Seven right now to secure the physical inspection sheets.""
