Chapter 1 - The Ring of Betrayal

Maya Bennett stared at the man standing in front of her in the deserted service corridor. His worn denim jacket, scuffed work boots, and rough stubble looked like something pulled out of a bargain thrift bin, yet the steel intensity in his gray eyes belonged to someone accustomed to commanding entire boardrooms. When he claimed the gold eagle ring belonged to his company, she felt an involuntary shudder crawl down her spine.
""Who are you really?"" Maya demanded, clutching her lanyard like a protective shield. ""You're dressed like a day laborer who wandered in off the street, but you talk like you own the place.""
Daniel Carter did not flinch. For the past twenty-two years, his face had graced the covers of Forbes, Bloomberg, and aviation trade magazines, but behind a coarse beard, a flat trucker cap, and ordinary fatigue, people saw only what they expected to see. ""My name is Daniel Carter,"" he said quietly, his voice dropping into a low, measured register. ""And I don't just own shares in this airline, Maya. I own the asphalt under your feet, the gate outside, and every bolt on that aircraft.""
Maya let out a bitter, nervous laugh. ""Right. And I’m the Queen of England. Look, mister, whoever you are, I came to you because you were sitting in seat 1A on the passenger manifest. I overheard them saying seat 1A had to be occupied today no matter what. I didn’t want an innocent passenger incinerated over the Kansas plains because some corporate executive wanted to sweep a faulty fuel manifold under the rug!""
""Look at me carefully, Maya,"" Daniel instructed softly, stepping under the harsh fluorescent bulb of the vending machine nook. He pulled a slim titanium cardholder from inside his faded jacket and slid out an executive bypass badge with holographic gold lettering and an unlisted master biometric key. ""Look at the signature at the bottom.""
Maya took the card. Her hands trembled so violently that the plastic clicked against her fingernails. The portrait on the badge showed a clean-shaven, impeccably tailored titan with razor-sharp cheekbones. Then she looked up into the rugged, weathered face standing inches from her. The realization hit her like an icy downdraft at thirty thousand feet. Her knees gave way, and Daniel caught her elbow to steady her.
""Mr. Carter..."" she stammered, all color draining from her cheeks. ""Oh God. I... I didn't know.""
""Keep your voice down,"" Daniel commanded gently, scanning both ends of the hallway. ""The man you saw wearing that ring is Victor Hale. He is my Chief Operating Officer, my closest confidant, and the godfather of my only daughter, Chloe. If Victor is altering mechanical manifests and forcing an unairworthy airframe into service, he isn't just cutting corners. He knows I routinely perform unannounced spot checks disguised as economy passengers on Monday mornings. But someone intentionally moved my ticket from 3F to 1A less than an hour ago.""

The chill in Daniel's chest deepened into absolute rage. Seat 1A was situated directly adjacent to the forward left fuselage bulkhead, precisely where an uncontrolled mechanical failure of the high-pressure fuel pump on the number-one engine would tear through aluminum skin like wet tissue paper.
""Victor didn't just alter a maintenance log to save money,"" Daniel whispered, realizing the monstrous truth that stared back at him. ""He set a trap. He wanted this plane to go down with me inside it.""
