Chapter 7 - Box 408

The subterranean vault beneath First National Bank of Savannah smelled of cold steel, aged parchment, and mineral dust. A single bare bulb hung from the low arched brick ceiling, illuminating rows of dull brass safety-deposit boxes that dated back to the Great Depression.

Thomas Choi led the way with a heavy ring of master keys, his slippers scuffing softly against the polished concrete.

Janelle held Elijah tightly. The baby was awake now, clutching Janelle’s finger, his wide eyes reflecting the faint overhead light.

""Min-jae came here twenty-six months ago,"" Thomas said, his voice echoing off the metallic walls. ""He was shaking, Daniel. He knew Robert’s people were tracking his cell phone and his corporate credit cards. He drove five hundred miles in a rented sedan, paid cash, and spent four hours inside this viewing booth.""

Thomas stopped before a tall stack of boxes near the back corner. He pointed a trembling finger at Box 408.

""Min-jae told me that if anything happened to him, only two people were ever allowed to turn this lock: his brother Daniel, or a woman carrying his child."" Thomas looked at Janelle with deep reverence. ""You must be Danielle.""

""Danielle didn't make it,"" Janelle said softly, her voice catching. ""I’m Janelle. Danielle was my best friend. But this is their son, Elijah.""

Thomas placed a wrinkled hand over Elijah’s small forehead, murmuring a quiet traditional blessing in Korean. Then, he turned to Daniel. ""Insert your key, Daniel. Let the truth out.""

Daniel stepped forward. He slid the tarnished brass key into the lower cylinder of Box 408, while Thomas inserted the master bank key into the upper slot. Both turned together with a heavy, satisfying click.

The steel door swung outward.

Inside lay a long, black metal lockbox covered in a light film of gray dust. Daniel pulled it out with steady hands and carried it over to the small wooden examination table in the center of the vault.

Janelle leaned in close as Daniel flipped the metal clasps open.

Inside, resting on top of several thick stacks of legal files, was an unopened cream envelope with Min-jae’s familiar, bold handwriting across the front:

To Daniel — When you are finally ready to see.

Daniel’s hands trembled violently. He tore the envelope open and pulled out a single handwritten letter along with a heavy, encrypted USB flash drive and an official South Carolina marriage certificate bearing the gold seal of Richland County.

Daniel read the letter silently, his chest rising and falling in sharp, jagged breaths.

""What does it say?"" Janelle asked, her heart pounding.

Daniel looked up. His eyes were bloodshot, swimming with a mixture of profound grief and absolute, lethal rage.

""Min-jae discovered the truth about our father,"" Daniel whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. ""Robert poisoned him. Small, systematic doses of digitalis over six months, masking it as congestive heart failure. Min-jae had our father’s tissue samples exhumed and tested by an independent private toxicologist in Switzerland before Robert could have the body cremated.""

Janelle pressed her hand against her mouth, horrified. ""Dear God...""

""And there's more,"" Daniel continued, pointing at the USB drive. ""This drive contains the complete unedited server backups from Song Logistics from the week Min-jae left. It details sixty-four shell companies Robert created to launder money through maritime shipping containers. But most importantly...""

Daniel pulled out a thin legal affidavit signed by a former mechanic from an auto repair shop in Charlotte.

""Min-jae knew Robert had tampered with his brake lines,"" Daniel said, his voice dropping into a terrifying whisper. ""The mechanic confessed on video and signed this affidavit. Robert paid him fifty thousand dollars in cash to slice the hydraulic line inside Min-jae’s steering column so that the brakes would fail on a high-speed descent.""

Janelle felt sick to her stomach. ""Robert had his own nephew murdered.""

""Not just Min-jae,"" Thomas Choi said quietly from the corner. ""Your father. Min-jae. And if you didn't comply with the marriage to Vivian Park, Daniel... you were next.""

Suddenly, the heavy iron alarm bell outside the vault began clanging violently.

Red emergency strobe lights began flashing across the steel ceiling.

Thomas’s face went white. ""Someone just breached the upper bank lobby. They didn't pick the lock. They blew the doors off with shaped charges.""
