Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Nursery

The sound of Elijah’s sharp, frightened wail shattered the stillness of the penthouse.
Janelle lunged forward instinctively, but Daniel caught her arm, pulling her low against the kitchen island. ""Stay behind me. Don't make a sound.""
Through the darkness, the faint red glow of an emergency exit sign cast eerie shadows across the corridor. From the service corridor, Janelle heard the unmistakable scrape of metal against stone—the heavy emergency fire doors were being pried open with a crowbar.
Daniel clicked off the safety of his handgun, his movements quiet, smooth, and practiced. He moved swiftly down the hallway like a shadow, keeping his back against the wall, with Janelle trailing close behind, her heart hammering against her ribs so violently she could hear the blood roaring in her ears.
As they reached the entrance of the nursery, the nursery door swung open.
A tall figure clad in black tactical gear emerged, carrying Elijah strapped securely inside a ballistic transport carrier. On the floor behind him, one of Daniel’s private security nurses was slumped unconscious against the white crib, a zip-tie binding her wrists.
""Put the baby down,"" Daniel said, his voice dropping to a register so cold it was barely human. He leveled the barrel of the gun directly at the intruder’s forehead.
The man froze, but didn't drop the carrier. A second man stepped out from the adjacent bathroom, raising a silenced pistol toward Daniel.
Janelle didn't hesitate. Adrenaline obliterated her fear. Grabbing a heavy bronze floor lamp from the corridor wall, she swung it with everything she had, slamming the weighted base into the second man’s knee.
The man grunted in agony, his shot going wild and punching a silent hole through the drywall. He collapsed onto the carpet, clutching his shattered kneecap.
The first intruder turned to flee toward the fire stairs with Elijah, but Daniel closed the distance in two explosive strides. Daniel caught the man’s tactical vest, spinning him around and driving his elbow hard into the intruder’s throat. The man choked, stumbling backward, losing his grip on the carrier.
Daniel caught the baby carrier with his left hand, pulling it against his chest while driving his gun barrel under the intruder's chin with his right.
""Move,"" Daniel whispered, ""and your family collects your life insurance tonight.""
The man went limp, raising his gloved hands. ""Don't shoot. We were hired... we were just hired to extract the kid. No harm, man. That was the contract. Just extract and deliver to an agency transport.""
""Who hired you?"" Daniel demanded, pressing the barrel harder until the man gasped for air.
""A law firm,"" the man wheezed, terror finally breaking through his tactical facade. ""Sterling & Vance Partners. On behalf of an anonymous family trust. We had fake CPS paperwork. That's all I know, I swear to God!""
Sterling & Vance was Robert Song’s primary corporate litigation firm.
Janelle rushed forward, tearing open the carrier’s flap. Elijah was crying hysterically, his small face bright red, but he was completely unharmed. She lifted him into her arms, pressing him against her chest, rocking him frantically as tears burned her cheeks. ""I have him. I have him, Daniel. He's safe.""
Daniel looked down at the intruder on the floor. His eyes were completely devoid of mercy.
The elevator chime suddenly echoed down the corridor as emergency generator power finally kicked in, flooding the penthouse with harsh yellow light. Six armed men in dark blue suits, bearing the insignia of Song Logistics Executive Security, poured into the suite with drawn weapons.
Leading them was Angela, holding a tablet and an encrypted radio.
""Mr. Song!"" Angela took in the scene with wide eyes. ""The perimeter sensors were looped from an external junction box. We intercepted a second team in the garage.""
""Handcuff these two to the plumbing in the laundry room,"" Daniel ordered coldly. ""Call the FBI field office, not the local precinct. Tell Special Agent Miller that Robert Song just committed attempted kidnapping across state lines.""
Daniel turned toward Janelle. His suit shirt was smeared with drywall dust, his knuckles scraped and bleeding.
""Pack the diaper bag,"" Daniel said.
May you like
""Where are we going?"" Janelle asked, holding the sobbing child close.
""Savannah,"" Daniel replied, pulling the brass key from his pocket. ""Before Robert realizes his extraction failed.""
