Chapter 2 - Cold Eyes and Silver Spoons

The penthouse atop the Song Tower in Midtown felt less like a home and more like an art museum carved out of grey slate and tempered glass. Floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the sprawling green canopy of Piedmont Park, but inside, the rooms were hushed and sterile.

Janelle sat on an oversized cream sofa, holding Elijah against her shoulder. The baby had just finished a warm bottle, his tiny hands clutching the hem of her cardigan. For the first time in eight hours, Janelle felt the exhaustion crashing into her bones like lead weights. Her shoulders ached, and her wet heels had left raw blisters on her ankles.

The heavy door to the terrace slid open, letting in a draft of crisp autumn air. Daniel walked into the living room holding a glass of sparkling water. He had changed out of his custom wedding tuxedo into a dark charcoal sweater and slacks, looking noticeably worn around the eyes.

He set the glass down on the marble coffee table in front of her, along with a pair of soft fleece slippers. ""Put those on. Your feet are bleeding through your stockings.""

Janelle blinked in surprise. She hadn't expected Daniel Song to notice something so mundane. ""Thank you.""

""My housekeeper prepared the guest suite down the hall,"" Daniel said, seating himself on the armchair opposite her, his elbows resting on his knees. ""Crib, sterilizer, organic formula. My assistant raided a high-end baby boutique three blocks away before it closed.""

""You work fast,"" Janelle murmured, slipping off the painful shoes.

""Money solves logistical problems quickly,"" Daniel said flatly. ""It doesn't solve character problems.""

He studied her face for a long moment. There was no trace of arrogance in his posture now, only a piercing, analytical intensity. ""You gave up your job, didn't you?""

""I took an indefinite leave of absence,"" Janelle corrected. ""I couldn't leave Elijah in an understaffed state facility while your family ignored Danielle's letters. Danielle was an only child. Her parents passed away years ago. Min-jae was dead. If I hadn't taken emergency temporary guardianship from the court, Elijah would have vanished into the Georgia foster care registry within forty-eight hours.""

""And you walked into a high-society wedding with four hundred guests and armed guards knowing Robert could have had you arrested for trespassing before you reached the third pew.""

""I knew Danielle spent her final breaths gasping through fluid in her lungs, begging me to make sure Min-jae’s brother knew Elijah existed,"" Janelle said, her voice dropping into a steady, unyielding tone. ""A few embarrassed socialites in designer gowns didn't scare me half as much as failing Dani.""

Daniel was silent. His gaze drifted to Elijah, who was now fast asleep, breathing softly against Janelle’s chest.

""Min-jae and I didn't speak for three years,"" Daniel said quietly, his voice carrying the rough weight of regret. ""Our grandfather built Song Logistics from a two-truck depot in Savannah. When he passed, he left the voting shares split equally between Min-jae, me, and Robert. Robert convinced me that Min-jae was erratic, that his ideas for restructuring the labor unions and opening community equity funds would bankrupt the firm.""

Daniel ran a hand over his face. ""Min-jae yelled at me in the boardroom. He called me a puppet in an expensive suit. He told me that Robert was poisoning the company from the inside out, laundering money through offshore shell corporations under the guise of expansion. I didn't believe him. I thought he was just bitter because our board chose me as CEO.""

""He wasn't bitter,"" Janelle said softly. ""He was heartbroken. Danielle told me Min-jae kept a framed picture of you two fishing off Tybee Island on his nightstand until the day he died.""

Daniel looked down at his own hands, his jaw working as if trying to hold back a storm of emotion.

Before he could speak, the elevator chime chimed with a crisp ping. The double doors slid open to reveal Angela, holding a sealed manila envelope stamped with the red wax emblem of Emory Diagnostic Laboratories.

Angela walked across the marble floor with rapid, decisive strides. ""Dr. Vance ran the twenty-four-marker forensic panel twice to eliminate any statistical anomaly.""

Janelle’s heart leaped into her throat. She knew the truth, but the cold finality of official paper always carried an electric dread.

Daniel stood up. His hand was remarkably steady as he broke the wax seal and slid out the document. His eyes scanned the legal preamble, skipping directly to the bold black type at the bottom of the page.

Angela recited from memory: ""The probability of relatedness between Daniel Song and the male infant Elijah Song is 99.98% consistent with full avuncular relationship. Elijah is biologically the son of Min-jae Song.""

Daniel stood frozen for three long seconds. He closed the folder with a sharp, definitive snap.

""Order my security team to double the perimeter around this building,"" Daniel commanded, his voice cold as winter ice. ""Robert doesn't set foot in this tower. And Angela?""

""Yes, Mr. Song?""

""Call the family attorney. Tell him to freeze all discretionary distributions from the Song Family Trust immediately.""
