Chapter 3 - The Broken Veil

The heavy walnut doors of the penthouse study swung open at eight o'clock the following morning, revealing Vivian Park standing in the entryway.
She was no longer wearing the million-dollar wedding gown. Instead, Vivian wore an immaculate beige cashmere trench coat, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, severe chignon. Her face was pale, devoid of emotion, but her eyes held a razor-sharp lucidity.
Janelle stood by the kitchen island, sterilizing Elijah’s bottles, feeling instantly out of place in her borrowed oversized sweater.
""Vivian,"" Daniel said, rising from behind his desk. ""I didn't expect you to come here personally.""
""Your security guard at the lobby desk tried to deny me access,"" Vivian said smoothly, unbuttoning her coat and placing a slim leather folder on the marble table. ""I reminded him that until the public announcement goes out, my father still controls sixteen percent of your West Coast logistics nodes.""
She glanced briefly toward the crib in the corner of the living room, where Elijah was happily kicking his feet against a plush mobile. Vivian’s expression softened for a fraction of a second, an expression so quick Janelle almost missed it.
""He looks like Min-jae,"" Vivian murmured.
Daniel froze. ""You remember Min-jae?""
""Of course I remember Min-jae,"" Vivian replied, turning to look directly at Daniel. ""Before you were anointed the golden child of the logistics empire, Min-jae was the one who refused to let your uncle bully the warehouse staff. Unlike you, Daniel, your brother had eyes that actually looked at people, not balance sheets.""
Daniel’s jaw tightened. ""Vivian, about yesterday—""
""Save the corporate apology,"" she interrupted, waving a manicured hand dismissively. ""Yesterday was the luckiest day of my life. Walking down that aisle, I felt like a prize heifer being led to an auction block to solidify a cross-Pacific trade agreement between my father and Robert Song.""
Janelle stepped forward slightly, curious despite herself. ""You knew Robert was behind it?""
Vivian turned her sharp gaze onto Janelle. There was no hostility in her eyes, only an appraising respect. ""Robert approached my father eight months ago, precisely three weeks after Min-jae’s fatal crash. He promised my father preferential supply routes if the Park conglomerate backed Robert’s bid to replace Daniel as chairman at the annual shareholder meeting next spring.""
Daniel’s face darkened with dangerous clarity. ""Robert told me your father demanded the marriage as a condition of renewing the West Coast contracts.""
""Robert lies the way normal people breathe,"" Vivian said coldly. ""He used my family's ambition to corner you. He wanted you married, distracted, and tied into a conservative corporate structure that would prevent you from digging into the overseas audits. But he didn't count on Min-jae leaving an heir.""
Vivian tapped the leather folder on the table.
""What is that?"" Daniel asked.
""My father's private investigator report on Robert Song,"" Vivian answered. ""My father is ruthless, Daniel, but he is not stupid. He never signs a merger without investigating his partners' liabilities. Two weeks ago, my father's investigators flagged several massive offshore transfers originating from Song Logistics corporate accounts in the Cayman Islands. They were signed under an executive authorization code registered to your uncle.""
Janelle felt a chill race down her spine. ""Danielle told me that before Min-jae died, he found documents proving someone was siphoning millions out of the pension funds.""
""Min-jae was going to the federal authorities,"" Vivian confirmed, looking Daniel dead in the eyes. ""That was the real reason he left Atlanta. He was compiling an ironclad paper trail to put Robert in prison without bringing down the entire family business. But then Min-jae died on a rain-slicked highway when his steering column inexplicably failed.""
The silence in the penthouse became suffocating.
Daniel stared at the folder on the desk as if it were laced with venom. ""Min-jae’s crash was ruled an accident by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.""
""A single-car accident on an unlit mountain road,"" Vivian countered. ""The vehicle caught fire. The wreckage was crushed and melted down before a second mechanical inspection could take place. Robert arranged the scrap disposal within seventy-two hours of the funeral. Did you ever ask why?""
Daniel’s breathing grew heavy. The pieces of an agonizing puzzle were slamming together in his mind with terrifying speed.
""Why are you giving me this?"" Daniel asked quietly.
May you like
Vivian picked up her purse and pulled her trench coat tight. ""Because I don't like being played for a pawn. And because Min-jae once stood up for me when Robert tried to demean me at a charity gala five years ago. Treat that baby well, Daniel. He is the only honest thing left of your family name.""
She turned on her heel and walked out, leaving the front door open just wide enough to let the cold wind howl down the hallway.
