Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Penthouse

By midnight, the city lights below looked like scattered diamonds drowned in black ink. Elijah was fast asleep in the nursery down the hall, monitored by two private nurses Daniel had vetted through his personal security detail.

Janelle couldn't sleep. She walked out into the expansive kitchen to pour a cup of chamomile tea, her bare feet silent on the heated stone floor.

She stopped abruptly when she saw Daniel sitting in the dark at the dining table. The only illumination came from the ambient blue glow of three separate laptop screens. Dozens of spreadsheets, bank statements, and shipping manifests were reflected in his hollow, exhausted eyes.

""You should be resting,"" Janelle said softly, leaning against the counter.

Daniel didn't look up from his screen, but his fingers paused over the keyboard. ""Min-jae’s will was probated six months ago. Robert presented a document allegedly executed in Savannah four years ago, leaving Min-jae’s voting shares in trust under Robert’s control in the event of death without lineal descendants.""

""Lineal descendants,"" Janelle repeated, the legal term hanging between them like a blade.

""If Min-jae had a legal child, that entire probate document is null and void under Georgia law,"" Daniel explained, his voice low and raspy. ""Elijah automatically inherits Min-jae’s thirty-three percent stake in the empire. Combined with my shares, Robert’s voting power is reduced to zero. He loses everything. His board seat, his executive compensation, his immunity from corporate audits.""

Janelle wrapped her hands around her warm mug. ""Which means Robert has every reason in the world to make sure Elijah never gets legally recognized as Min-jae’s heir.""

""He filed an emergency injunction two hours ago,"" Daniel said, turning a monitor toward her. ""Robert’s legal team is challenging the validity of my DNA test. They are claiming in Fulton County Superior Court that you fabricated Danielle Whitaker’s marriage certificate, that the baby was adopted through an illegal gray-market broker in North Carolina, and that you are running an extortion racket against the Song estate.""

Janelle felt her temper flare. ""Danielle carried that baby inside her while enduring radiation therapy! How dare he claim Elijah isn't hers!""

""The judge granted Robert a temporary hearing for tomorrow afternoon,"" Daniel continued, his jaw setting hard. ""Robert is demanding that the child be placed in the custody of Child Protective Services pending a court-mandated sixty-day independent genetic verification.""

""No!"" Janelle slammed her mug down, hot tea splashing over the granite. ""No! If Elijah goes into the state system, Robert has contacts in every agency in this city. A baby can disappear, Daniel! An accident in a foster home, a clerical error, a sudden respiratory failure—I’ve seen what happens to unprotected infants when powerful people want them gone!""

Daniel stood up, closing the gap between them until he was looking down into her panicked eyes. ""He isn't going anywhere. I won't let Robert touch him.""

""You can't stop a court order, Daniel! You're a billionaire, not a dictator!""

""Listen to me,"" Daniel said, his voice dropping into an intense, grounding command. He reached out and gently took hold of her trembling shoulders. ""Min-jae trusted you. Danielle trusted you. Now you have to trust me. Robert thinks he can use the law because he wrote the family bylaws. But he forgot that Min-jae was always three steps ahead of him.""

Janelle’s breathing hitched. ""What do you mean?""

Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, tarnished brass key attached to a faded green plastic tag. On the tag, stamped in faded gold ink, was the number 408 and the seal of First National Bank of Savannah.

""I found this taped to the back of the picture frame Min-jae left me,"" Daniel whispered. ""The one with the photo from Tybee Island. Robert thought Min-jae left nothing behind. But Min-jae left this. It’s for a private safe-deposit box opened under our mother’s maiden name.""

Janelle gasped softly. ""Danielle mentioned a key! She said Min-jae hid the original marriage documents and something else—something he called his 'life insurance' against Robert.""

Suddenly, the penthouse lights flickered violently.

A loud electronic crackle echoed from the service elevator bay down the corridor. The soft hum of the air conditioning system died instantly, plunging the entire floor into pitch-black darkness.

Daniel’s grip on Janelle tightened. His posture shifted instantly from corporate executive to coiled predator.

""Backups should have kicked on in two seconds,"" Daniel whispered, reaching behind his desk and pulling a matte-black Glock from a hidden drawer. ""Someone just cut the main junction box in the basement.""

Down the hall, a baby’s cry pierced the darkness.
