Chapter 9 - Broken Glass and Cold Truths

Later that evening, after the cake was cut and the dancing was in full swing, Sarah quietly pulled me aside near the historic fountain.

"There's someone outside the front gate who wants two minutes with you," Sarah said, her tone cautious. "It's Kendra. The security team won't let her past the perimeter unless you give permission."

Ethan saw us talking and immediately stepped over, his protective instincts on high alert. "She shouldn't be anywhere near here."

"I want to hear what she has to say," I told Ethan gently, placing a hand on his chest. "I need to close this door completely, on my own terms."

Ethan nodded, walking with me to the wrought-iron gates where Kendra stood under the streetlamp, wrapped in a trench coat over her bridesmaid dress.

Her eyes were red and swollen from crying, her posture shrunken and miserable. Two security guards stood five feet behind her, watching her every twitch.

"Olivia," Kendra choked out as I stopped three feet away on the other side of the gate. "Please, just let me apologize. I am so, so sorry."

"You sat on the bed next to her, Kendra," I said, my voice quiet, completely stripped of anger. "You watched her pour poison into my life, and you laughed. You called her 'evil' like it was an amusing game."

"I was drunk, and I was scared of her!" Kendra pleaded, clutching the iron bars. "Vanessa has dirt on everyone from college! If anyone crosses her, she ruins their jobs, their relationships—she's a sociopath! I didn't think she would actually go through with it!"

"Being afraid of a bully doesn't excuse helping them dig the grave, Kendra," I replied steadily.

"I know... I know," Kendra wept, wiping her nose with a crumpled tissue. "I left her apartment an hour ago. She went completely crazy after the video dropped. Her firm's senior partner saw the post, and she was put on immediate administrative suspension pending an ethics review."

Ethan let out a quiet, humorless scoff. "Actions have consequences."

"Vanessa's parents cut off her trust fund allowance tonight too," Kendra added, looking desperately at me for some sign of mercy. "Her mother told her she brought shame upon their entire family name in Charleston society. She's completely ruined, Olivia. She has nothing left."

"I didn't ruin her, Kendra," I said, looking her directly in the eye. "Vanessa ruined herself. I simply refused to be her victim."

Kendra swallowed hard, her shoulders dropping in total defeat. "Are we... can we ever get back to where we were? Even after some time?"

I looked at the girl who had shared my college dorm, who had cheered with me at graduation, and who had stood by silently while another woman tried to steal my husband.

"No, Kendra," I said with soft, unyielding finality. "Some glass breaks so thoroughly that trying to put it back together only cuts your hands. I forgive you so that I can have peace, but you will never have access to my life again."

Kendra lowered her head, fresh tears falling onto the Charleston pavement. "I understand. I'm sorry, Olivia. Congratulations on your marriage."

She turned and walked slowly into the warm night fog, disappearing down Meeting Street alone.

Ethan took my hand through the gate, his fingers warm and reassuring against mine. "Are you okay?"

May you like

I took a deep, full breath of the jasmine-scented night air, feeling completely clean, completely unburdened, and entirely free.

"I have never been better in my entire life," I said, smiling up at him. "Let's go dance."
