Chapter 4 - The Altar Ambush

The corridor fell into an unnatural silence as guests and bridal attendants stared back and forth between us.

Vanessa swallowed hard, visibly scrambling to reassemble her crumbling composure. "I... someone left a dress in the bridal suite, and an accident happened. I thought you were ruined."

"Why would you think that?" I asked, taking one slow, deliberate step toward her. "My bridal suite is on the fourth floor of the Harborview. Who told you to enter room 214?"

Vanessa's eyes darted frantically toward Kendra, who was standing three paces back, looking terrified. "I was just trying to help! I'm your maid of honor!"

"Are you?" I asked softly, letting the question hang heavy in the air.

Before Vanessa could answer, the chapel organ began swelling with the opening notes of the processional hymn.

Sarah stepped between us with a clip-on microphone already pinned to her collar. "Attendants in lineup positions now, please. The ceremony is starting on schedule."

Vanessa exhaled a shaky breath, clearly assuming the worst of the confrontation was postponed. She quickly smoothed down her green dress and took her place behind the bridesmaids, clutching her bouquet like a weapon.

She leaned toward Kendra and whispered through gritted teeth, "It doesn't matter. I still have Ethan's ring. Watch him sweat at the altar."

The procession began with seamless elegance. One by one, the bridesmaids floated down the center aisle, their soft lavender gowns catching the warm stained-glass light.

When Vanessa walked through the chapel doors, she tilted her chin high, flashing a dazzling smile at the congregation. She locked eyes with Ethan at the altar, giving him a lingering, sympathetic look meant to signal shared secrets.

Ethan did not look back at her eyes. He looked at her hands, his expression carved from dark, unforgiving granite.

Then the congregation stood as the grand organ chords announced my entrance.

Walking beside Ryan down that long, flower-lined aisle, every trace of doubt vanished from my soul. Ethan stood waiting beneath the floral arch, watching me with tears glistening in his eyes, radiating total devotion.

When Ryan placed my hand into Ethan's, Ethan leaned down and whispered, "You are the strongest woman I have ever known."

The officiant, Reverend Matthews, began the traditional opening liturgy before two hundred hushed guests.

Vanessa stood three feet to my left, shifting her weight anxiously from foot to foot. Her eyes darted toward Ethan's best man, Liam, waiting for the pivotal cue.

"May we have the rings, please?" Reverend Matthews announced, extending his hands over the gilded Bible.

Liam stepped forward and produced my platinum diamond band from his jacket pocket with absolute ease.

Vanessa gasped softly, stepping forward with an exaggerated expression of sudden, tragic panic. She began patting her gown pockets frantically, dropping her bouquet onto the polished marble steps.

"Wait," Vanessa whispered, loud enough to carry through the first three rows of Ethan's family. "Oh God, wait. The ring box... it was in my clutch bag in the dressing room. Someone took it!"

A low murmur rolled across the pews as guests leaned forward in their seats.

Vanessa looked directly at Ethan, her voice brimming with theatrical sympathy. "Ethan, I am so, so sorry. Someone must have stolen it during the chaos earlier. Olivia left it unattended!"

Ethan didn't blink. He didn't show panic, anger, or confusion.

Instead, Ethan reached into his own tuxedo pocket and smoothly drew out a polished velvet box. He flipped it open with a quiet snap, revealing his matching platinum band gleaming under the chandelier lights.

"Looking for this, Vanessa?" Ethan asked, his voice ringing clearly into the sanctuary microphone.

Vanessa froze mid-sentence, her arm still extended, her face freezing into a grotesque mask of shock.

"I've had my ring since yesterday afternoon," Ethan said evenly, turning his full gaze toward her. "So whose ring did you steal from Room 214 this morning?"
