Chapter 8 - The Reception Retribution

The evening reception at the William Aiken House was transformed into an enchanted wonderland under glowing fairy lights.
A seven-piece jazz band played lively swing music while guests enjoyed Charleston crab cakes and vintage champagne on the manicured lawns. There was no awkward whispering about the afternoon drama; instead, an electric atmosphere of celebration filled the courtyard.
Ethan and I moved through the tables, greeted by warm embraces and proud congratulations from family and friends.
Around 8:00 PM, my phone buzzed in my clutch with a series of frantic notifications from social media. Sarah Jenkins caught my eye from near the main ballroom entrance and gave me a sharp, knowing nod.
I unlocked my phone to find that Vanessa had attempted one final, desperate counterattack online.
She had posted a cropped photo of the wine-stained decoy dress on Instagram with a tearful caption claiming I was a "narcissistic bride" who framed her out of petty insecurity. Her post had gained fifty sympathetic comments from college acquaintances within an hour.
"Look at this," I whispered to Ethan, holding up the glowing screen under the patio lights.
Ethan's jaw tightened for a moment before a calm, sardonic smile touched his face. "Sarah already anticipated this three hours ago."
At that exact moment, Sarah tapped the microphone on the bandstand, drawing the attention of the two hundred guests.
"Ladies and gentlemen, family and friends," Sarah announced with a bright, professional smile. "Before we cut the wedding cake, the bride and groom have prepared a special anniversary montage celebrating the journey that brought them here tonight."
Two massive projector screens lowered smoothly over the brick carriage house walls on either side of the lawn.
Guests turned their chairs toward the screens, wine glasses in hand, expecting childhood photos and vacation memories.
Instead, the screen lit up with high-definition security footage timestamped 8:42 AM that very morning from Room 214 of the Harborview Hotel.
The clear video showed Vanessa sneaking into the empty suite, picking up the velvet ring box, and slipping it into her purse with a sly smirk. Then came the second clip from 1:15 PM inside the chapel vestry, showing Vanessa deliberately dumping the pitcher of sangria across the white dress.
A collective gasp swept across the patio, followed by angry murmurs from guests who had previously doubted the altar accusations.
Below the video, the audio track played Vanessa's midnight confession with crystal clarity, accompanied by synchronized subtitles on screen.
The video concluded with a simple, elegant slide displaying a screenshot of Vanessa's Instagram victim post side-by-side with the surveillance footage. The caption read: The Truth Speaks for Itself.
At the exact same time, my cousin Chloe hit "send" on an official public post tagging Vanessa, her sorority alumni page, and her employer's public relations account.
Within minutes, Vanessa's comment section flipped completely upside down. The sympathetic messages vanished, replaced by hundreds of comments condemning her calculating cruelty and fraudulent lies.
Across town in her apartment, Vanessa was watching her entire carefully constructed reputation implode in real time.
Her phone began blowing up with messages from mutual friends severing ties, and by 9:00 PM, she completely deleted all her social media profiles.
"That," Ryan said, walking over and clinking his champagne glass against mine, "was the cleanest surgical strike I have ever witnessed."

"She chose the battlefield," Ethan replied, wrapping an arm securely around my shoulders. "We just provided the lighting."
We turned our backs on the screens, leaving the past behind us on the brick wall, and stepped onto the dance floor under the stars.
