Chapter 7 - The True Vows

With the toxicity removed from the sanctuary, a collective sigh of relief seemed to pass through the entire chapel.
Kendra quietly slipped out through the back row with her head bowed, too ashamed to remain standing with the bridal party. The remaining three bridesmaids, who had known nothing of the scheme, gathered around me with fierce hugs and quiet apologies.
Reverend Matthews adjusted his spectacles, cleared his throat with great dignity, and looked out over the congregation.
"Well," the Reverend remarked with dry Southern wit, "now that the extraneous matters have been properly resolved, shall we conduct a holy marriage?"
Laughter rippled through the pews, breaking the heavy tension and replacing it with genuine, joyful warmth.
Chloe stepped forward, taking the maid-of-honor bouquet from the steps, and stood proudly by my side. She straightened my veil, winked at me through happy tears, and whispered, "Now you get your real wedding, Liv."
Reverend Matthews resumed the ceremony, his words carrying a newfound weight and reverence.
When it came time for our personal vows, Ethan took both of my hands into his. He looked down at me with an intensity that made the entire world outside that room fade into complete insignificance.
"Olivia," Ethan began, his voice deep and steady. "When people try to describe you, they often use words like sweet, gentle, or quiet. But today, you showed everyone what I have known from the moment I fell in love with you."
He paused, brushing a fallen tear from my cheek with his thumb.
"You have a heart of pure gold, but a spine of absolute steel," Ethan continued, smiling through his own tears. "You protect what is good, you face betrayal without fear, and you stand tall with unmatched dignity. I don't want someone 'safe'—I want you, my partner, my equal, and my greatest adventure."
The chapel was so quiet that Ethan's sister Clara sobbed audibly into her lace handkerchief.
When my turn came, I didn't need to look at the vow cards I had left on my hotel nightstand. The words came directly from my chest, clear, strong, and unfiltered.
"Ethan," I said, looking into the eyes of the man who had stood by me without hesitation. "True love isn't loud, jealous, or selfish. It doesn't need to sabotage others to prove its worth. True love listens, protects, and trusts."
I took his platinum ring from the satin pillow Chloe held out and slipped it onto his left finger.
"Last night, I thought I had lost my friends," I told him, smiling as the sun illuminated the altar. "Today, standing here with you, I realized I haven't lost a single thing that truly mattered. I choose you today, tomorrow, and for every storm we face together."
"By the power vested in me," Reverend Matthews beamed, raising his hands in blessing over us, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Ethan, you may kiss your bride!"
Ethan pulled me into his arms, lifting me slightly off the ground as his lips met mine in a fierce, breathless kiss.
The entire chapel erupted into thunderous applause, cheers, and standing ovations that echoed all the way out to the Charleston streets.

As we walked back up the aisle hand-in-hand, white rose petals showering down upon us, I felt completely weightless.
The nightmare that was meant to crush me had turned into the greatest triumph of my life.
