Chapter 1 - The Chemical Veil

The neon lights of the NICU seemed to buzz against Ava’s temples as she held the edge of the luxury swaddle between her thumb and forefinger. The consultant’s smirk vanished, replaced by an indignant flush creeping up from his starched collar. “That bedding is custom organic Egyptian cotton, imported straight from Milan,” he scoffed, crossing his arms over his monogrammed lab coat. “You’re suggesting a world-renowned textile atelier poisoned a billionaire’s nephew?”

“I’m not suggesting they poisoned him intentionally,” Ava said, her voice remaining steady even as her pulse hammered in her throat. “I am telling you that this fabric has been treated with an unlisted industrial fire retardant and scented finishing starch. Look at the infant’s skin. That is not neonatal eczema. That is acute contact dermatitis combined with transdermal toxicity.”

Mommy, he can’t breathe right. The small voice inside her echoed with uncanny, crystalline clarity. It’s heavy in the room.

Ava didn’t hesitate. She reached out and smoothly unbuttoned the tiny blue onesie. Across Mason’s fragile torso, angry scarlet wheals flared against the translucent pale skin. “Get non-treated, hospital-grade sterile flannel immediately,” Ava directed the bedside nurse, whose hands trembled as she pulled open the supply drawer. “And strip the other four bassinets right now.”

“Wait a damn minute,” the woman in pearls snapped, stepping between Ava and the next incubator. This was Beatrice Foster, Adrian’s stepmother, a socialite whose cold eyes had graced every society column in New York for three decades. “You are an underpaid hospital resident overstepping your station. Adrian, tell security to escort this girl out. She is contaminating the private suite.”

Adrian didn’t speak immediately. His piercing gray eyes moved from his sister’s squirming infant to Ava’s face. He walked closer, his physical presence suffocating the small space. Up close, Ava caught the faint scent of cedarwood, rain, and dark espresso—the exact same scent that had lingered in the sheets of the Skyline Grand penthouse two months ago. Her breath caught. Did he remember? Had he seen her face clearly enough in the dim stormlight?

Adrian leaned down, his knuckles lightly grazing the rough, treated edge of the blue blanket. He rubbed the fabric between his fingers, then brought it to his nose. A sharp, chemical sting flared in his nostrils. His jaw tightened so hard the muscle leaped beneath the bronze skin.

“Strip every single bassinet,” Adrian commanded. His voice wasn't loud, but the room went utterly dead silent.

“Adrian!” Beatrice protested shrilly. “Dr. Sterling is our lead specialist!”

“Dr. Sterling missed a basic chemical rash that was suffocating my sister's children,” Adrian cut her off, his gaze locking directly onto Ava. “Strip them. Bathe them with lukewarm sterile saline. Now.”

The staff mobilized instantly. Within ten minutes, all five babies were cleansed of the caustic starch and wrapped in plain white hospital swaddles. Slowly, the shrill, desperate screams subsided into soft, rhythmic snuffles. Little Mason gave a tiny shudder, his respiratory rate dropping from a frantic ninety breaths a minute to a calm forty-five. His tiny fingers curled around Ava’s gloved index finger.

He feels warm now, Mommy, her unborn baby murmured softly, sending a gentle, soothing ripple through Ava’s abdomen. Thank you.

Ava felt a tear slip down her cheek. She blinked it away quickly, pulling her hand back before anyone could notice her shaking. She looked up to find Adrian staring at her with an intensity that made the air feel thin.

“What is your name again?” Adrian asked.

“Dr. Ava Carter,” Ben Miller answered for her, stepping forward defensively to shield his resident. “She’s one of our top minds in pediatric medicine, Mr. Foster.”

“You saw what five seasoned private physicians failed to notice in seventy-two hours,” Adrian said smoothly. He pulled a heavy silver card case from his suit pocket and produced an embossed black card. “My sister Sophia will be discharged to our estate in Greenwich tomorrow. She needs twenty-four-hour medical supervision for the quintuplets. The family board authorized a blank check for the head residential caretaker.”

Beatrice gasped. “Adrian, she is nobody! You cannot bring an unknown stray into the manor!”

“I am offering you two hundred and fifty thousand dollars for three months of residential service, Dr. Carter,” Adrian said, ignoring his stepmother entirely. “Room, board, and full executive legal immunity.”

Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. The exact amount her corrupt uncle Henry owed to Victor Dane. It was the price of her freedom. The price of keeping her child safe from the underworld loan sharks hunting her.

Ava felt the baby flutter gently within her womb.

Go with him, the little voice whispered. He is our father.
