Chapter 6 - Unmasked in the Sanctuary

Vanessa looked wildly around the room, searching for a single sympathetic face among two hundred outraged guests.

Her own father sat with his head buried in his hands, completely mortified by his daughter's public disgrace. Her mother was frantically whispering excuses to neighboring pews, but people were physically shifting away from her.

"Kendra!" Vanessa barked, whirling around on her remaining bridesmaid. "Tell them! Tell them Olivia was always jealous of me! Tell Ethan the truth!"

Kendra backed up two steps, shaking her head vigorously, tears of humiliation running down her cheeks. "Leave me out of this, Vanessa. You told me you were just joking last night. I'm not going down with you."

"You coward!" Vanessa screamed, lunging half a step toward her before Ryan stepped firmly between them.

"That's enough," Ryan said, towering over her with icy authority. "You are trespassing on private chapel grounds. Hand over the bouquet and leave."

"I am the Maid of Honor!" Vanessa protested, her voice turning shrill and hysterical. "I planned this entire weekend! You can't just throw me out of the wedding party like garbage!"

"You threw yourself out at midnight in Room 215," I said, my voice cutting cleanly through her screams.

Vanessa stopped dead, her eyes widening in sudden, paralyzing realization. The blood drained from her face for the second time that afternoon.

"What did you say?" she whispered, barely able to form the words.

"The connecting door between our hotel rooms," I explained calmly, holding her gaze with complete stillness. "Sound carries remarkably well through Charleston historic plaster."

I reached into Chloe's bouquet, where a small wireless speaker receiver had been discreetly resting. Sarah Jenkins pressed play on her control tablet at the back of the chapel sound booth.

Vanessa's voice echoed through the vaulted ceiling of St. Philip's, loud, crisp, and unmistakable:

"Spill wine on her dress, lose the rings, whatever it takes. She doesn't deserve him. I've been working on him for months... Men like Ethan don't marry girls like Olivia unless they want someone safe. I'm just trying to correct his mistake."

The recording clicked off, leaving behind a silence so suffocating you could hear the harbor wind outside.

Vanessa covered her mouth with both hands, stumbling backward until she hit the floral pillar. The entire church now looked at her not just with shock, but with absolute disgust and pity.

"You recorded me," Vanessa whimpered, tears of genuine panic finally spilling over her mascara. "That's illegal... you can't play that here!"

"Actually, South Carolina is a one-party consent state for audio recordings, Miss Vance," Sarah Jenkins announced brightly from the back of the church. "And you spoke loud enough for the entire hallway to hear anyway."

Two uniformed Charleston police officers, who had been waiting quietly near the entrance, walked down the center aisle. Their polished boots clicked heavily against the stone floor, signaling the end of the spectacle.

"Ma'am," the senior officer said, placing a firm hand on Vanessa's bare shoulder. "The venue management has revoked your guest invitation. You need to gather your belongings and vacate the premises immediately."

"Get your hands off me!" Vanessa hissed, but her voice had lost all its fire, crumbling into a broken whimper.

As the officers escorted her toward the side exit, she shot one last hateful glare over her shoulder at Ethan and me.

"You'll regret this, Ethan!" she spat bitterly. "You'll be bored out of your mind within a year!"

May you like

Ethan didn't even look in her direction. He kept his eyes locked on mine, gently squeezing my hand. "I think my life is going to be exceptionally peaceful from now on."

The side door clicked shut behind Vanessa, severing her presence from our lives forever.
