Chapter 5 - The Velvet Box Revealed

The silence in St. Philip's Chapel was so absolute you could hear the flicker of the altar candles.

Two hundred guests held their breath, completely stunned by Ethan's direct accusation at the altar. Vanessa's mother, sitting in the fourth row, stood up halfway before her husband pulled her back down.

"Ethan, what are you saying?" Vanessa stuttered, her voice cracking as a furious red flush crept up her neck. "I would never steal anything! I've been trying to keep this wedding together all morning!"

"Then empty your clutch bag, Vanessa," Ryan's voice boomed from the front row as he stepped into the aisle.

"This is ridiculous! This is my private property!" Vanessa shrieked, clutching her satin purse against her ribs. "Olivia, tell them to stop! They're ruining your ceremony!"

I turned to look at the woman I had called my best friend since our freshman year of college. There was no warmth left in my heart, only the clean, sharp edge of finality.

"Open the bag, Vanessa," I said quietly. "Or Sarah calls the two police officers waiting in the vestibule to search you for grand larceny."

Vanessa's eyes bulged with sudden, wild panic as she looked toward Kendra for support. Kendra immediately lowered her head, staring intently at the floorboards, completely abandoning her coconspirator.

Realizing she had no escape, Vanessa's trembling fingers unzipped the clutch. She reached inside and pulled out the small black velvet box she had taken from the nightstand hours earlier.

"I found it on the table!" Vanessa shouted defensively, thrusting it forward. "I picked it up to protect it! I forgot it was in my bag because of all the stress!"

"Open the box," Ethan commanded, his voice cold and unwavering.

With shaking hands, Vanessa snapped the velvet lid open, expecting to reveal an expensive heirloom gold band.

Instead, sitting neatly on the white satin cushion was a dull, rusted brass curtain ring with a price tag from a hardware store.

A loud, startled laugh erupted from the groomsmen's side, quickly followed by gasps across the chapel.

Pinned to the inside lid of the box was a folded piece of white paper. Reverend Matthews, looking thoroughly bewildered, took the note and held it up to the light.

"Would you like me to read this, Miss Vance?" the Reverend asked cautiously.

"Please do, Reverend," I answered, never taking my eyes off Vanessa's horrified face.

The Reverend cleared his throat and read aloud into the microphone: "'To the thief who thought she could steal my future: you can keep the brass. My real treasure is already at the altar.'"

A wave of loud murmuring broke out across the entire congregation. Vanessa's hands shook so violently that the velvet box tumbled from her grip, clattering loudly against the marble floor.

"You set me up," Vanessa snarled, dropping every shred of her polished Southern charm. Her face twisted into pure, unadulterated venom. "You staged this! You pathetic, manipulative little mouse!"

"You're not the only one who knows how to stage things, Vanessa," I said calmly.

"Ethan, you cannot marry her!" Vanessa yelled, stepping between us, completely unraveling before everyone. "She's insane! She calculated this whole thing to embarrass me! I'm the one who truly understands you! You know what we talked about in your condo!"

Ethan took half a step backward, placing an arm protectively around my waist with total revulsion.

"The only thing we talked about at my condo, Vanessa," Ethan said loudly, "was me calling you an Uber after you threw yourself at an engaged man."

The sanctuary erupted into shocked gasps, several elderly relatives fanning themselves in disbelief.

Vanessa stood completely isolated at the center of the altar, exposed, cornered, and entirely undone.
