Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Justice

The days following the arrests were a whirlwind of legal proceedings, forensic accounting, and media frenzy. Headlines dominated every major news network across the country: ""BILLIONAIRE’S FIANCÉE AND COO INDICTED IN KIDNAPPING AND EMBEZZLEMENT CONSPIRACY."" The press parked outside my estate gates for seventy-two hours, broadcasting live updates as federal investigators uncovered the full extent of the operation.
In the basement, forensic teams spent three days processing the cistern. They recovered zip-tie fragments, fingerprints matching Marco and Vivian, and a hidden safe behind the brick masonry containing fifty bearer bonds and fraudulent passports intended for their flight to South America.
Nathan Hayes managed the corporate fallout with extraordinary skill. The board of directors held an emergency session, voting unanimously to strip Marco of all executive titles and shares, while filing immediate civil suits to freeze every offshore account associated with the syndicate. Within ninety-six hours, federal authorities had frozen ninety-four percent of the stolen assets in Zurich and Panama, securing the financial integrity of the Duca Group.
Vivian broke during her first federal interrogation. Facing federal charges of kidnapping, attempted murder, wire fraud, and grand larceny, she turned state's evidence within forty-eight hours, providing prosecutors with detailed recordings, encrypted text messages, and financial trails that left Marco with zero defense. Their grand scheme, designed to leave them untouched billionaires, had instead secured them front-row seats to mandatory life sentences without the possibility of parole.
Yet amid the towering storm of public scandal and legal victories, my only focus was on the top floor of the west wing.
Sophia had been moved to a sunlit suite overlooking the private rose gardens. Dr. Harrison had monitored her recovery closely, prescribing physical therapy and high-nutrient care to reverse the damage caused by a week of severe deprivation. Her color had returned, the hollow shadows beneath her cheekbones softening with each passing day.
Emma had transformed. The quiet, terrified child who had waited barefoot in the dark corridor was now smiling again. The estate staff, horrified by how they had been deceived by Viktor and Vivian, went above and beyond to surround the little girl with warmth, bringing her toys, baking fresh pastries, and ensuring that no corner of the house remained shrouded in fear.
On the fifth evening after the arrest, I walked up to the west wing suite, carrying a tray of chamomile tea and shortbread biscuits.
I knocked softly. ""Sophia? May I come in?""
""The door is open, Alexander,"" her voice called out gently.
I stepped inside. Sophia was seated near the arched window, dressed in a soft cashmere sweater, watching Emma sketch colorful drawings on an easel near the balcony. When Sophia saw me, a warm, genuine smile lit up her face—a smile devoid of the professional distance she had maintained for years as a member of the household staff.
""How are you feeling tonight?"" I asked, setting the tray on the coffee table.
""The doctor says my lungs are completely clear of the cellar dampness,"" she replied, resting her hands in her lap. ""And for the first time in seven days, Emma slept through the entire night without waking up from nightmares.""
""That is the best news I’ve heard all week,"" I said, pulling up a chair opposite her.
Sophia looked at me, her hazel eyes deep and contemplative. ""Nathan told me what you did with the corporate trust, Alexander. He said you established an independent legal foundation in Emma’s name, funded with the recovered assets.""
""It's the least I could do, Sophia,"" I answered honestly. ""You and Emma suffered unimaginable horrors because of the monsters I brought into my inner circle. No amount of money can erase those seven days, but Emma will never have to worry about her education, her security, or her future ever again.""

Tears welled in Sophia's eyes, but she brushed them away with a soft laugh. ""You saved our lives, Alexander. If you hadn't come home early, if you hadn't listened to a terrified three-year-old in the middle of the night... we wouldn't be here.""
""Emma saved you, Sophia,"" I murmured, watching the little girl vigorously coloring a bright yellow sun across the paper. ""Her love for you broke through their entire plan.""
