Chapter 7 - The Arrest on Live Television

The grand salon of the Duca estate was blindingly bright. Sunlight poured through the two-story arched windows, reflecting off polished marble floors and crystal chandeliers. Seated around the mahogany conference table were the twelve members of the board of directors, along with legal representatives, financial auditors, and three prominent business journalists who had been invited to cover the historic merger announcement.

When the double doors opened, Marco and Vivian walked in first.

They looked like ghosts walking toward a guillotine. Vivian had attempted to repair her makeup, but the streaked mascara and hollow, vacant stare betrayed her utter terror. Marco was trembling, his expensive suit rumpled, beads of cold sweat glistening on his forehead.

I entered behind them, flanked by Nathan Hayes.

The room buzzed with polite applause as the board chairman, Arthur Vance, stood up. ""Alexander, congratulations. Today marks the dawn of a new era for the Duca Group. Vivian, Marco, please take your seats so we can execute the final documents.""

Marco looked toward the terrace doors, his eyes darting toward the lawn, frantically searching for an escape route. But two private security guards stood motionless at the perimeter.

""Thank you, Arthur,"" I said, stepping up to the central podium. The room fell into respectful silence. ""Before we sign any documents, there is an urgent amendment that must be presented to the board.""

""An amendment?"" Arthur frowned, adjusting his spectacles. ""Alexander, the terms were finalized three weeks ago.""

""These terms were drafted under fraudulent pretenses,"" I announced, my voice carrying cleanly across the salon. ""Over the past twenty-four months, Chief Operating Officer Marco Rossi and my fiancée, Vivian Romano, have embezzled one hundred and eighty million dollars from the Duca trust, laundering the capital through seventeen shell corporations registered in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland.""

A collective gasp swept through the room. Board members sat bolt upright; papers rustled, and the journalists immediately raised their recording devices.

""That's slander!"" Marco yelled, his voice cracking with panic. ""He's having a nervous breakdown! The stress of the merger has made him paranoid! Arthur, call security!""

""Security is already here, Marco,"" I replied calmly.

The grand double doors at the rear of the salon swung wide.

A dozen armed federal agents, wearing dark windbreakers with yellow ""FBI"" lettering emblazoned across their backs, poured into the room, led by Special Agent in Charge Miller.

""Marco Rossi! Vivian Romano!"" Agent Miller’s voice boomed through the hall. ""Federal agents! You are both under arrest pursuant to warrants issued by the Southern District of New York! Step away from the table and place your hands behind your backs!""

Vivian let out a piercing shriek, collapsing onto the Persian rug as two female agents stepped forward with handcuffs. ""Alexander, please! Don't do this! I love you! He forced me! Marco made me do it!""

Marco didn't cry. He lunged forward, grabbing a heavy silver letter opener from the conference table, his face twisted in feral desperation. ""I built this company with you, Alex! You were nothing without me! You handed me everything on a silver platter because you were too weak to govern your own house!""

Before Marco could take two steps toward me, Agent Miller and a secondary officer tackled him to the floor. The letter opener clattered across the marble, spinning harmlessly against the mahogany baseboards. With brutal efficiency, Marco’s arms were pinned behind his back, the steel handcuffs clicking into place with finality.

The salon was in absolute chaos. Camera flashes strobed against the walls, capturing every second of their public humiliation. Vivian was hauled to her feet, weeping hysterically, her designer suit ruined, her platinum hair disheveled as the agents escorted her toward the foyer.

Marco turned his head as he was dragged past the podium, his venomous gaze locking onto mine.

""You think you won, Alex?"" Marco spat, blood dripping from his split lip onto his white collar. ""You're all alone. You have no one. You’re just a lonely man in an empty castle.""

May you like

""I'm not alone, Marco,"" I replied steadily. ""And this house is no longer yours to poison.""

As the federal agents escorted the traitors through the front doors into the flashing lights of waiting patrol cars, the heavy silence of liberation settled over the estate. The rot had finally been excised.
