Chapter 1 - The Cold Truth in the Dark

The heavy brass doorknob rotated with a slow, agonizing squeak. Every instinct screamed at me to shield Emma, whose tiny fingers were buried into my forearm with bruising intensity. I caught the child against my chest, slipping her behind the doorframe just as the wood swung inward. The silhouette in the threshold was framed by the cold illumination of the hallway chandelier. It was Viktor, head of my estate’s night detail, his service weapon drawn low by his side. When his gaze registered my face, color drained from his weathered cheeks, his pupils flaring with unmistakable shock. He had not anticipated my presence until noon the next day, and that solitary calculation had shattered whatever script he was following.

""Mr. Duca,"" Viktor stammered, lowering the barrel against his trousers. ""We didn't receive word that your flight landed early. I heard unauthorized movement in the west wing.""

""Since when does an owner need clearance to inspect his own residence?"" I asked, keeping my voice level, stripped of all emotion. ""And since when do the living quarters of my personal staff carry reinforced padlocks on the outside?""

Viktor’s gaze flickered toward the snapped iron shackle on the floorboards, then down to Emma, whose frightened eyes peeked from behind my coat. A muscle ticked beneath his jaw. He reached instinctively toward the radio strapped to his shoulder harness, but I stepped forward, closing the distance before his fingers could depress the transmit switch. I held Sophia Carter’s black journal in my left hand, visible enough to convey authority without exposing its contents. The ledger was heavy, filled with meticulous logs of offshore transactions, security overrides, and midnight arrivals that had systematically drained my corporate holdings while I traveled.

""Stand down, Viktor,"" I commanded softly. ""Hand over your master pass and radio. Right now.""

He hesitated for three seconds, his mind weighing fifteen years of my corporate payroll against whatever illicit loyalty Marco Rossi and Vivian Romano had purchased during my absence. When I did not flinch, reality set in. He slowly unclipped the radio unit, unbuckled his key ring, and set them atop a dresser.

""You shouldn't be down here, sir,"" Viktor whispered, his breath shallow. ""Miss Romano said the housekeeper abandoned her post and ran off with an associate. She gave specific orders to keep the area quarantined until legal cleared the contract termination.""

""Vivian lied,"" I replied. ""And you complied with locking a three-year-old child inside a room without food or water for days.""

""I was told someone was checking on her,"" Viktor protested, his voice cracking beneath the weight of complicity. ""I only follow directives from Mr. Rossi when you're off-site. That has been the standard protocol since the merger.""

""Your protocol ends tonight,"" I said coldly. ""Go downstairs to the main guard post. Do not touch the internal consoles, do not make outside calls, and do not leave the estate gates. If I find a single outgoing transmission on the private network log, you will answer to state investigators before sunrise.""

Viktor nodded stiffly, backing out into the corridor before disappearing down the back stairs. The moment his heavy footsteps faded, I knelt before Emma, smoothing the matted curls away from her forehead. Her small body was still shivering uncontrollably from adrenaline and hunger.

""Emma,"" I whispered gently, keeping my tone steady to anchor her racing heart. ""You mentioned your mother went to get a red bottle from the wine place seven nights ago. Did she go to the cellar beneath the kitchen?""

The little girl nodded slowly, her lip quivering. ""She said she’d be back before bedtime stories. But the basement door went click, and then Miss Vivian told me Mommy packed her bags and left forever.""

A dark, sickening realization took root in my chest. Vivian had not merely fabricated a story to cover Sophia’s absence; she had orchestrated an immediate erasure of the woman who managed my private affairs. Sophia was far more than an ordinary housekeeper. She was the daughter of my father's most trusted estate manager, a woman with master keys and direct access to the estate’s structural blueprints. If Sophia had caught Marco and Vivian funneling assets through shell companies registered under my family name, they couldn't afford to let her speak.

I took Emma’s trembling hand, guiding her silently down the service stairs toward the central wing, my jaw locked in determination. The sprawling mansion, once a sanctuary of generational wealth, suddenly felt like an intricate trap designed to consume everything I loved.
