Chapter 4 - The Counter-Strike

By 4:00 AM, the estate had been converted into a tactical operations center. I escorted Sophia and Emma to the private master suite on the third floor—a reinforced sanctuary accessible only by a secondary elevator that operated on a private biometric code unknown even to the house staff. I had my personal physician, Dr. Harrison, driven through the service gate in an unmarked vehicle to treat Sophia for severe dehydration, malnutrition, and abrasions. Emma refused to leave her mother's side, holding Sophia's thumb even as the doctor administered an intravenous saline drip.
Once Sophia was stabilized and asleep with Emma curled safely against her chest, I locked the reinforced doors and descended to the private study.
I powered on my secondary, air-gapped terminal—a secure system that bypassed the estate’s main servers entirely. Connecting through an encrypted satellite link, I called Nathan Hayes, a retired federal prosecutor who had served as my family's senior legal counsel for three decades. It took four rings for Nathan to answer, his voice rough with sleep.
""Alexander? Do you know what time it is?""
""Nathan, open your secure terminal right now,"" I said without preamble. ""I am sending you the complete financial ledger of Marco Rossi’s shell corporations, along with surveillance logs and biometric access records from my residence.""
The line remained silent for five seconds as Nathan processed the urgency in my tone. ""What happened?""
""Vivian and Marco locked Sophia Carter in the historic cistern seven days ago,"" I explained, the words tasting like ash. ""They have been systematically siphoning funds from the Duca family trust using forged signatures and unauthorized corporate resolutions. They plan to finalize the theft during the pre-wedding board meeting this morning.""
""My God,"" Nathan breathed. ""Are Sophia and the child safe?""
""They are under my direct protection. But I don't want a standard civil filing, Nathan. I want federal indictments for kidnapping, attempted murder, conspiracy, and wire fraud. I want them arrested on live cameras in front of the entire corporate board.""
""If Sophia testifies and we have the physical ledger from the cellar, Marco and Vivian are looking at twenty-five years to life,"" Nathan said, his legal mind moving with razor precision. ""I will contact the United States Attorney’s Office and the FBI’s financial crimes division immediately. We can have federal agents staged outside your estate within two hours. But Alexander—you must act completely normal when they arrive. Do not let them suspect you know anything until the agents are in position.""
""Trust me, Nathan,"" I replied, watching the first gray tendrils of dawn break across the sprawling lawn. ""I will play the loving fiancé and the trusting partner until the very second the handcuffs click shut.""
I spent the next two hours downloading security footage from the hidden auxiliary cameras my father had installed decades ago in the cellar masonry—cameras that Marco had failed to locate when he disabled the modern digital feeds. The footage was crystal clear: Marco physically forcing Sophia down the iron ladder; Vivian laughing as she slid the heavy steel hatch shut; the two of them celebrating with champagne in the corridor while a mother wept beneath their feet.
Every piece of evidence was copied onto encrypted flash drives and synchronized with federal servers. By 6:30 AM, Nathan confirmed that two federal judges had signed emergency arrest warrants and search orders. A tactical unit was already mobilizing five miles away, waiting for my signal.
At 7:15 AM, the sound of a luxury sports car echoed down the winding driveway.
Looking through the study window, I saw Marco’s midnight-blue Aston Martin pull up to the front entrance, followed closely by Vivian’s white Mercedes coupe. Vivian stepped out, dressed in an immaculate cream designer suit, her platinum hair styled to perfection, a brilliant smile playing on her lips. Marco joined her, adjusting his tailored cufflinks, looking every bit the triumphant corporate prince about to inherit an empire.

They looked radiant, successful, and utterly monstrous.
I adjusted my tie, smoothed the lapels of my suit jacket, and walked downstairs to welcome them home.
