Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The cellar was dead quiet, illuminated only by the low amber sconces along the brick corridor. Vivian walked ahead, her high heels clicking sharply against the cold flagstones, while Marco followed closely behind, scanning the shadows with subtle unease.

""Where did you place the bottle, Alex?"" Vivian asked, glancing at the empty tasting table.

I didn't answer. Instead, I stepped behind them, closed the heavy oak door, and slid the iron bolt into place with a resounding, metallic clack.

Marco spun around instantly, his expression darkening. ""What are you doing, Alex?""

""Just ensuring our conversation remains entirely private,"" I said, walking slowly to the center of the room.

""Alexander, you're acting very strange,"" Vivian said, letting out a nervous laugh that sounded brittle in the damp air. ""Unlock the door. It's freezing down here, and we don't have time for games.""

""It is freezing, isn't it?"" I asked, looking directly into her eyes. ""Especially when you don't have a coat. Or food. Or water. For seven straight days.""

The color vanished from Vivian’s face in an instant. Her lips parted, but no sound emerged.

Marco stepped forward, his fists clenching defensively. ""I don't know what you think you're talking about, Alex, but we have a meeting upstairs—""

""I am talking about the decommissioned cistern,"" I interrupted, pointing the beam of my flashlight directly toward the displaced wine rack and the open hatch in the floor.

Marco froze. His gaze dropped to the unsealed iron ring, then snapped back to me, pure panic flaring in his eyes.

""You... you went down there?"" Marco stammered.

""I didn't just go down there, Marco. I brought Sophia back up.""

Vivian gasped, stumbling backward against a rack of vintage Champagne, sending several bottles rattling against their wooden frames. ""That's impossible! She was locked in—""

She caught herself, clamping her hand over her mouth, but the confession was already hanging in the stagnant cellar air like a noose.

""Locked in?"" I repeated, my voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. ""You mean the woman you claimed abandoned her child to run off to Mexico? The woman you told me left with another man?""

""Alex, listen to me,"" Marco said, his voice turning desperate, his hands raised in surrender. ""It wasn't what it looks like. Sophia found some internal financial transfers. She misinterpreted routine corporate reallocations. She threatened to go to the press and derail the merger! We had to contain her until the contracts were signed. We were never going to hurt her, Alex! We were going to pay her off and relocate her abroad!""

""You gave her two sips of water a day, Marco,"" I said, stepping toward him. Marco backed away until his spine hit the brick pillar. ""You locked a three-year-old child in an upstairs room, alone in the dark. And your fiancée—my fiancée—planned to stage a gas explosion to burn them both alive.""

""She's lying!"" Vivian screamed, her poised facade completely crumbling into hysterical rage. ""Sophia is a filthy little servant who was trying to extort us! She doctored those ledgers, Alexander! I did everything for us! For our future! Marco promised me we’d be partners, that we wouldn't have to live under your family's shadow anymore!""

""Shut up, Vivian!"" Marco roared, turning on her with wild eyes. ""You idiot! You told me you wiped the auxiliary surveillance servers!""

""I did wipe them!"" she shrieked back. ""He couldn't have seen anything unless—""

""Unless my father built a closed-circuit system forty years ago that doesn't connect to your digital toys,"" I finished calmly.

I pulled out my phone and tapped the screen once.

From the ceiling speakers installed throughout the cellar, the crisp, clear audio of their midnight conversation from seven nights ago began to play. Marco’s recorded voice echoed off the damp stone: “Make sure the child stays quiet. If Alex comes home early, we say Sophia abandoned her. If she makes a sound, put her in the cistern with her mother.”

May you like

Vivian sank to her knees on the cold flagstones, burying her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. Marco stood paralyzed, his chest heaving, his empire of lies collapsing into dust around him.

""You're done, Marco,"" I said softly. ""The board of directors isn't waiting upstairs for a presentation. The United States Attorney and two dozen federal agents are.""
