Chapter 3 - The Web of Treason

Sophia collapsed into my arms, weeping silently as the agonizing tension of seven days in captivity broke. Her hands were ice-cold, her skin bruised where she had struggled against her restraints. I wrapped my wool overcoat around her shoulders and supported her weight as I helped her climb the iron rungs out of the dark pit. Every step was an ordeal for her weakened muscles, but the thought of Emma gave her supernatural strength.
Once we reached the upper cellar floor, I sat her against an oak cask and handed her a bottle of mineral water from my coat pocket. She drank greedily, gasping for air between swallows.
""Take it slowly,"" I murmured, checking her pulse, which was rapid but stabilizing. ""Who put you down there, Sophia? Was it Marco?""
""Marco and Vivian together,"" she whispered, shivering violently despite the heavy wool. ""Seven nights ago, I came down to retrieve a 1982 Petrus for dinner. They were already down here, Alexander. They had open crates, but they weren't storing wine. They were stashing portable hard drives, forged deeds, and offshore bearer bonds taken from your private study safe.""
""My private safe?"" I felt a surge of cold fury. ""The wall safe behind the library portrait?""
Sophia nodded, tears carving clean lines through the dust on her cheeks. ""Vivian had your biometric bypass key. She copied your thumbprint while you were sleeping last month using a silicone mold. When I walked into the vault, Marco tackled me to the ground. Vivian wanted to kill me immediately, but Marco panicked. He said if my body was found on the property, the police would tear the entire estate apart and uncover the offshore accounts before their final transaction cleared.""
""So they threw you down into the cistern to starve while I was out of state,"" I said, piecing together the monstrous calculation.
""They brought me just enough water to keep me alive until the twenty-first day,"" Sophia explained, gripping my lapels with sudden desperation. ""Your wedding day, Alexander. The transfer of your grandfather’s trust fund requires Vivian’s legal signature as your wife to release forty percent of the estate’s corporate assets into the joint holding company. Marco orchestrated the merger terms two years ago. The moment you sign those papers at the altar, they plan to liquidate every asset, wire the money to unmonitored accounts in Panama, and frame you for corporate embezzlement.""
""And you?""
""Vivian told me that the night before the wedding, they would stage an accidental gas leak in the staff quarters,"" Sophia said, her voice shaking with horror. ""They were going to burn the wing with Emma inside, making it look like I had abandoned my daughter and caused a fire out of negligence. They have fake travel tickets booked in my name to Mexico. Everything has been fabricated.""
The depth of their depravity took the breath from my lungs. Marco had been my roommate in college; he was the best man at my upcoming wedding. Vivian had shared my bed for two years, whispering promises of love and devotion while systematically preparing to destroy my life, murder an innocent woman, and incinerate a three-year-old child to cover her tracks.
""They underestimated two things, Sophia,"" I said, helping her stand as I retrieved her journal. ""They underestimated Emma's courage. And they forgot whose name is carved into the foundation of this empire.""
Supporting her with one arm around her waist, I guided Sophia up the cellar stairs. When we reached the kitchen, Emma looked up from the banquette. The moment the child’s eyes fell upon her mother, a choked cry escaped her throat.
""Mommy!"" Emma launched herself across the floor, crashing into Sophia’s knees.
Sophia sank to the floor, wrapping her arms around her daughter, burying her face into Emma's curls while tears flowed freely. For a brief moment, the suffocating atmosphere of betrayal dissipated, replaced by the profound, sacred reunion of mother and child.

Watching them, my resolve crystallized into steel. Marco and Vivian were arriving at eight in the morning to prepare for a pre-wedding press conference with the board of directors. They believed they were forty-eight hours away from absolute victory.
Instead, they were walking into an ambush.
