Chapter 8 - The Shadow's Last Gasp

Peace, however, is rarely handed over without one final, desperate struggle in the world the Morettis inhabited.
Three days before Isabella’s due date, a freak late-autumn blizzard descended upon Chicago, coating the North Shore in a blanket of thick, blinding snow and sub-zero winds. The city streets were virtually impassable, with emergency travel advisories keeping all but the most essential vehicles off the expressways.
Inside the estate, the power suddenly flickered and died, plunging the sprawling mansion into darkness. Seconds later, the heavy industrial generators kicked in with a low, vibrating hum, casting the hallways in the amber glow of emergency backup lights.
Marco’s voice crackled immediately over Dante’s encrypted radio handset. ""Boss, we have an issue. A private transport van just rammed through the outer service gate. Four armed individuals on foot. It looks like rogue remnants of Julian Sinclair’s private security detail—men who lost their pensions and off-the-books payouts when the feds seized the accounts.""
Dante stood up from the bed where he had been reading to Isabella. His eyes turned into cold flint. ""Where are they?""
""They breached the greenhouse perimeter. Leo and the outer perimeter team are engaging them in the courtyard, but the blizzard is blinding the thermal optics.""
Isabella sat up, her breath hitching as a sudden, sharp pain seized her lower abdomen with ferocious intensity. This was not a Braxton Hicks cramp. It was deep, agonizing, and accompanied by the distinct sensation of warm fluid breaking.
""Dante..."" she gasped, clutching the sheets as a low moan escaped her lips.
Dante dropped the radio and was at her side in an instant, his face draining of all color. ""Bella? What is it?""
""My water broke,"" she panted, her knuckles turning white against the bedpost. ""The baby... she's coming right now.""
Downstairs, the sharp, muffled cracks of suppressed gunfire echoed through the heavy walls of the estate. The remnants of Sinclair's syndicate were attempting a suicidal, scorched-earth hit, desperate to take something from the Moretti family before fleeing across the border.
""Marco!"" Dante roared into the radio, his voice echoing with primal ferocity. ""Lock down the second-floor stairwells! Call Dr. Chen immediately and tell her we need an emergency medical transport escorted by the tactical squad! Isabella is in labor!""
""The roads are closed, boss!"" Marco responded over the crackle of gunfire and howling wind. ""Dr. Chen is fifteen miles out! We have to hold the line here!""
Dante looked at his wife, who was breathing heavily through another crushing wave of contractions. The fear that had briefly flickered in his chest vanished, replaced by an absolute, divine clarity. He pulled off his watch, stripped off his jacket, and locked the steel security doors of the master suite from the inside.

""Look at me, Bella,"" Dante said, his voice dropping into a steady, immovable rock of calm as he knelt between her knees on the bed, his hands steady and warm. ""Forget the storm outside. Forget the noise downstairs. Marco and his men will handle the trash. Right here, right now, it’s just you and me. I delivered my brother's calves on our family's farm when I was fifteen years old, and I am not letting anything happen to our daughter. Breathe with me, Bella. Breathe.""
Isabella looked into his fierce, unyielding eyes, and despite the chaos, despite the gunfire raging in the blizzard outside, an overwhelming sense of safety washed over her. She gripped his hands, matching his deep, rhythmic breathing, ready to bring their new world into existence.
