Chapter 2 - The Midnight Countdown

The grandfather clock in the long upstairs gallery chimed eleven times, its brass pendulum swinging like a guillotine over the lavish corridors of the Moretti estate. Outside the reinforced windows, torrential autumn rain lashed against the glass, matching the storm brewing within the marble walls below. Isabella stood by the edge of the master bed, ignoring the heavy ache radiating down her lower back. She refused to sit like an invalid waiting for her fate to be decided by ruthless men in tailored suits.

""Mrs. Moretti, please,"" urged Leo, the towering guard Marco had left stationed inside the room. ""The boss gave strict orders. The master suite is panic-room grade. If anything goes wrong on the floor below, you are safest right here.""

""My husband is walking into an ambush engineered by a woman wearing my perfume and my husband's attention,"" Isabella said, her voice dropping into a register of chilling clarity. She smoothed the wrinkles of her ivory maternity gown. The dress was elegant, crafted from heavy Italian silk that draped over her eight-month belly like armor rather than defeat. ""I spent seven years running my mother’s diner on the West Side, dealing with loan sharks, corrupt inspectors, and street muscle. I didn't marry Dante to hide in an attic while another woman dismantles his empire.""

She walked toward the walk-in closet, retrieving a small, leather-bound notebook tucked behind a row of cashmere coats. It was her personal journal, but it was also a meticulous ledger. Isabella had never been a decorative trophy wife; before the pregnancy had forced her into bed rest, she had handled the philanthropic trusts and internal logistics for the Moretti foundation. Over the past three weeks, while Dante had grown distant, Isabella hadn't just wept in the dark. She had taken notes.

""Leo,"" she commanded, turning to face the guard with an authority that made the seasoned mercenary straighten his spine. ""Vanessa Sinclair didn't just walk into this house through business connections. Who cleared her vehicle through the security checkpoint at three o’clock today when the nursery cameras went dark?""

Leo hesitated, shifting his weight. ""Protocol requires either Mr. Moretti's digital token or the chief’s override.""

""And Dante was with me at the obstetrician until three-fifteen,"" Isabella countered, her eyes flashing. ""Marco was driving the chase vehicle behind us. Which means someone inside this house forged a digital override token using the household network."" She flipped open the small notebook, showing a series of IP addresses and entry timestamps she had jotted down after noticing anomalies in the house's automated climate control logs. ""The server ping came from the west guest suite. The suite Julian Sinclair has been occupying since Tuesday.""

Downstairs, the muffled roar of raised voices surged through the ventilation shafts. The party was disintegrating into chaos. Isabella felt a sudden, sharp tightening across her abdomen—a Braxton Hicks contraction triggered by the sheer adrenaline flooding her veins. She drew in a slow, calculated breath through her nose, resting her hands on her stomach until the cramp subsided. ""My daughter isn't arriving in a broken home, Leo. Open the door.""

Seeing the lethal resolve in her eyes, Leo realized that defying Isabella Moretti in this moment was far more dangerous than facing Dante’s wrath later. He reached into his jacket, unholstered his sidearm, and tapped the electronic keypad by the frame. ""I stay on your shoulder, ma'am. No exceptions.""

They stepped into the dimly lit hallway. The scent of expensive cigars, champagne, and unmistakable danger drifted up from the sweeping marble staircase. Far below, Vanessa Sinclair's voice cut through the background hum with polished, venomous charm: ""Ladies and gentlemen, Moretti Holdings has always stood for strength. But when leadership falters under domestic strain, duty demands that Sinclair Capital steps forward to protect our joint investments.""

Isabella moved toward the balcony rail, her hand gripping the cold iron banister. The countdown to midnight had begun, but she had no intention of waiting for the clock to strike twelve.
