Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Nursery

By two in the morning, the mansion had fallen into an eerie, hollow quiet. The hundreds of guests had been escorted off the property by security details; the federal authorities had transported Vanessa Sinclair and her father to the downtown metropolitan detention center; and the caterers had cleared away the untouched hors d'oeuvres and half-empty champagne flutes. The sweet scent of lilies and crushed ice hung heavy in the massive ground floor, masking the scent of betrayal that still stained the air.
Upstairs, on the third floor of the east wing, Isabella stood in the doorway of the nursery. The room was bathed in the soft, honey-colored glow of a brass nightlight. The walls were painted a gentle sage green, decorated with hand-painted murals of woodland creatures—a project Isabella had spent the last two months completing with her own hands. In the center sat the hand-carved mahogany crib that Dante had commissioned from an artisan in Florence.
Dante knelt on the hardwood floor beside the built-in bookshelf. A small toolkit lay open beside him. With surgical care, his calloused fingers removed the tiny black transmitter that technicians had wedged behind a row of illustrated children's classics. He dropped the bug into a glass tumbler, smashing it with the heavy butt of a tactical flashlight until it was nothing more than pulverized silicone and wire.
""They were going to listen to her first cries, Dante,"" Isabella whispered from the doorway, her voice cracking for the first time that night. She wrapped her arms around herself, trembling despite the warmth of the room. ""They were inside this room. They walked across her rug. They touched the things meant to keep her safe.""
Dante dropped the flashlight and was across the room in two strides. He didn't ask for permission this time; he simply wrapped his massive arms around her, pulling her gently against his chest until her forehead rested against his collarbone. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling the sweet, familiar scent of vanilla and lavender that was purely hers.
""I am so sorry, Bella,"" he murmured, his voice thick with unshed tears. ""I thought I was creating a shield around you. In my world, when a threat surfaces, you isolate it, you starve it of information, and you crush it in the dark. I thought if you didn't know how close they were, you wouldn't feel the fear.""
""The fear didn't come from Julian Sinclair, Dante,"" Isabella said, leaning back just enough to look into his dark, tortured eyes. ""The fear came from watching the man I love look through me as if I didn't exist. The fear came from wondering if the world was right—if I was just a temporary distraction until you found someone from your own social class.""
Dante cupped her cheeks in his hands, his thumbs gently wiping away the hot tears that finally broke free. ""Never say that. Look at me, Isabella. There is no empire without you. There is no fortune, no future, no legacy that means a damn thing if you aren't standing next to me. I built everything so our daughter would never have to fight the battles we fought. But tonight proved that you are the foundation of this house, not me.""

She placed her hands over his, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his pulse beneath her fingers. ""We do this together from now on. No more closed doors. No more secret wars. If someone comes for our family, we stand together in the light.""
""Together,"" Dante promised, kissing her forehead, her cheeks, and finally her lips with a fierce, possessive tenderness. ""Always.""
