Chapter 3 - The Gala Collapses

The grand ballroom looked less like a corporate celebration and more like a high-stakes court tribunal. Nearly two hundred of Chicago’s most influential figures—men whose signatures authorized skyscraper construction and district attorney appointments—stood in stunned silence around the grand staircase. At the base of the platform, Vanessa Sinclair held a gold fountain pen and a leather folio stamped with the official seal of the Cook County Probate Registry.

""Under the emergency provisions established in Dante Moretti’s primary trust,"" Vanessa announced, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings, ""incapacitation or failure to execute scheduled covenants triggers an immediate transition of voting shares to the joint management committee. As Dante is currently indisposed due to personal family crises, Sinclair Capital assumes interim authority.""

""Is that what you call a personal crisis, Vanessa?""

The voice rang out not from the stage, but from the sweeping curve of the grand staircase. Every head turned in unison.

Isabella descended the steps slowly, with the regal, deliberate grace of a queen marching toward her throne. Her ivory gown swept across the marble steps, her head held high, her dark hair falling in disciplined waves around her sculpted shoulders. Despite the heavy curve of her pregnancy, she radiated an overwhelming presence that immediately shrank Vanessa’s polished arrogance into cheap posturing.

Whispers erupted through the crowd like wildfire.

""Isabella?"" Vanessa’s face tightened, though she quickly recovered with a patronizing, pitying smile. ""My dear, you really shouldn't have come down. Stress is terrible for the baby. Dante instructed me to handle everything so you could rest.""

""My husband doesn't use mouthpieces to speak to his partners, and he certainly doesn't hire thieving socialites to forge legal documents,"" Isabella said clearly, stopping three steps above the ballroom floor so that she towered over the heiress.

Vanessa’s eyes flared with anger, but she held up the leather folio. ""These papers bear Dante’s digital imprint. If the Moretti-Sinclair merger is not ratified before midnight, Moretti Holdings defaults on forty million dollars in syndicated credit lines. Your husband is bankrupting his legacy out of sentimentality!""

""No,"" a voice like grinding granite cut through the hall.

Dante Moretti stepped through the towering French doors leading from the terrace gardens. The rain had dampened his dark hair, but his posture was absolute iron. Behind him walked four men in dark federal suits, accompanied by two uniformed officers from the state financial crimes division.

The room went dead silent. Dante didn't look at the financiers, the lawyers, or even Vanessa. His eyes locked onto Isabella on the stairs, sweeping over her from head to toe, visibly relaxing only when he saw she was unharmed and accompanied by Leo. Then, his gaze shifted to Vanessa Sinclair, turning colder than the Chicago winter.

""You should have checked the account routing numbers on those covenants, Vanessa,"" Dante said calmly, walking into the center of the clearing crowd. ""The syndication funds didn't come from Sinclair Capital. They came from a blind trust established five years ago under the name of Bennett-Moretti. My wife's family name.""

Vanessa's hand began to shake, the gold pen hovering over the parchment. ""That's impossible. Sinclair Capital controls eighty percent of the maritime equity!""

""Not anymore,"" Dante replied coldly. ""Ten minutes ago, your father Julian was detained at the western gate attempting to leave with three encrypted hard drives stolen from our private server. Hard drives that contained the nursery surveillance feeds, the tracking data planted on my wife’s medical vehicle, and wire transfer logs to an extortion ring in Montreal.""

A collective gasp swept through the assembly. Vanessa took a step back, her gaze darting frantically toward the exit, only to find the double doors barred by Marco Bellini and armed private security.

""You played a very dangerous game in my house,"" Dante murmured, stepping directly in front of her. ""And midnight hasn't even arrived yet.""
