Chapter 4 - Masks Torn Off

The ballroom devolved into calculated pandemonium as federal agents moved across the polished parquet floor. Guests who had spent decades mastering the art of discretion instinctively backed away toward the catering exits, desperate to disassociate themselves from the Sinclair name. The polished veneer of elite society stripped away in seconds, revealing the raw panic of predators realizing they had allied with the prey.

""This is an outrage! You have no legal standing to detain me!"" Vanessa shrieked, dropping the pretense of aristocratic composure. Her manicured hands clawed at her evening clutch as she backed away toward the marble fireplace. ""My father is a member of the Union League! He built half the commercial piers in this city! You're taking the word of a laundromat girl from the West Side over a family that has funded governors?""

""That laundromat girl understands real balance sheets,"" Isabella said, stepping down the final stairs and walking directly into the open circle. She stood beside Dante, shoulder to shoulder, their combined presence creating an impenetrable barrier. ""Your father didn't build those piers, Vanessa. He used shell companies to launder municipal pension shortfalls, and when the cracks began to show two months ago, he realized Dante was auditing the joint venture assets.""

Dante signaled to Marco, who projected an illuminated tablet screen directly onto the high ballroom wall. High-resolution financial audits, complete with red-flagged wire transfers, filled the space where corporate promotional slides had been shown earlier that evening.

""You didn't target my family because of business rivalry,"" Dante said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register that made even the federal investigators pause. ""You targeted Isabella because you knew she was the sole legal signatory on the offshore escrow accounts. If she suffered a medical crisis—if the stress caused her to lose our child and fall into medical distress—the emergency guardianship clauses in our prenuptial agreement would have temporarily reverted trustee power to the corporate board.""

Vanessa’s face lost every shred of color. Her eyes darted between the projected banking documents and the silent, disapproving stares of Chicago's most powerful financiers. ""You set me up. The meetings... the dinners... the late nights...""

""You thought you were charming me into choosing you over my wife,"" Dante said, his lip curling in utter disgust. ""In reality, every drink you poured, every schedule you requested, and every file you accessed was being logged on a closed intranet system Marco built specifically to catch your father’s mole. You were so busy playing the mistress in waiting that you didn't realize you were walking yourself straight into federal wire fraud and attempted extortion charges.""

""And the ruby?"" Isabella asked softly, looking directly at the pendant hanging around Vanessa's throat.

Dante stepped forward and reached out. With one swift, contemptuous flick of his wrist, he snapped the gold chain from Vanessa's neck. The links broke with a sharp click that sounded like a gunshot in the silent room. ""The jeweler replaced the center stone three days ago with a tracking transmitter. It recorded every conversation you had in our private nursery this afternoon, including your instructions to place the hidden listening device in our baby’s crib.""

Vanessa looked around wildly, finding no sympathy, no allies, and nowhere to run. ""You think you've won, Moretti? You have no idea who my father brought into this city. This isn't over with a few bank records!""

""For you,"" Dante whispered, stepping back as two female federal agents stepped up behind her, ""it is completely over.""
