Chapter 1 - The Other Woman’s Shadow

""Three weeks, Dante?"" Isabella’s voice did not rise, but the icy tremble running through it shook the quiet bedroom harder than a scream ever could. She pressed her palms firmly over the heavy swell of her eight-month belly, feeling the fragile, rapid flutter of their unborn daughter. The plush carpets of the Moretti estate suddenly felt like thin ice beneath her bare feet. ""Three whole weeks you looked into my eyes over breakfast, kissed my forehead before leaving for the city, and let me believe that you were falling out of love with me while you played Russian roulette with our lives?""
Dante stood motionless, the harsh ambient lights casting dark, hollow shadows across the sharp planes of his face. The pristine white French cuffs of his dress shirt were rolled up, revealing the tension coiled like steel wire through his forearms. For a man who had clawed his way to the apex of Chicago’s cutthroat financial and underworld empires, he looked entirely gutted. ""I was trying to keep you alive, Bella,"" he rasped, his voice raw with an agony he rarely allowed the world to see. ""The threat didn't just mention Moretti Holdings. It named the clinic. It gave the exact hour your water broke when you miscarried two years ago. They had eyes on our private lives. Whoever sent it knew things only family should know.""
""And your solution was to bring Vanessa Sinclair into our bedroom?"" Isabella gestured sharply toward the vanity table, where the empty velvet box lay like an open wound. ""You gave her the ruby necklace you swore was meant for me. You let her parade through my home, insulting my body, touching your arm in front of two hundred of your most powerful peers, while treating me like a shameful secret you locked upstairs!""
""The ruby wasn't a gift, Bella,"" Dante said, stepping forward cautiously, his palms held outward as though approaching a wounded animal that might bolt off a cliff. ""Julian Sinclair demanded collateral for the merger—a show of absolute faith before signing the offshore liquidation contracts at midnight. Vanessa insisted on wearing the Sinclair family stone, which had been recut into that very pendant. I had to let her wear it to keep her father at the table until Marco could trace the server hosting the blackmail.""
""And the bracelet?"" Isabella pointed a shaking finger at the anniversary diamonds resting on the cold dresser wood. ""Did your precious business deal require her to rummage through my personal jewelry box and put on the band you bought me to celebrate our first year of marriage?""
Dante’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure, lethal fury, though the rage was directed outward, beyond the mahogany doors of their suite. ""She crossed a line she will never recover from. I swear to you on my life, Bella, I never authorized her to come upstairs. I never authorized her to touch a single thing that belongs to you.""
Before Isabella could respond, the heavy oak doors swung open without a knock. Marco Bellini stepped inside, his tactical vest fastened tightly beneath his tailored blazer. The security chief’s face was grim, devoid of the usual professional calm he maintained during board meetings and street conflicts alike. ""Boss, we have an issue at the perimeter gate. Julian Sinclair’s private motorcade just blocked the western exit. And downstairs, Miss Sinclair has gathered the senior board members around the grand ballroom dais. She’s announcing that you’ve suffered an acute medical episode and that she is executing the power of attorney paperwork on your behalf.""

Isabella felt the blood rush from her head. ""Power of attorney? Dante, what did you sign?""
Dante didn't flinch. Instead, a terrifying, humorless smirk touched the edge of his lips. The paralyzed man from moments ago vanished, replaced by the apex predator who ruled Chicago’s shadows. ""I didn't sign anything, Bella. But it seems our little guest of honor couldn't wait until midnight to show her true hand."" He turned his gaze back to Isabella, his eyes burning with an intense, desperate pledge. ""Stay in this room with Marco’s top three men. Do not open this door for anyone. When I come back, you will have your answers—and Vanessa Sinclair will have nothing.""
