Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Coup

The emergency board meeting of Moretti Group was called for 9:00 AM sharp on Thursday.

Alexander walked into the executive boardroom wearing a fresh suit, but no amount of expensive tailoring could hide the ten pounds he had lost or the haunted, bruised look around his eyes. His father, Richard Moretti—the man whose birthday had started this entire catastrophic chain of events—sat at the far end of the long mahogany table, looking frail, angry, and deeply ashamed.

""You’ve ruined fifty years of family legacy in three weeks, Alexander,"" Richard said, his voice trembling with age and disappointment. ""The Vance Trust is demanding the resignation of the Chief Executive Officer as a prerequisite for renegotiating the debt structure.""

Alexander stood at the head of the table, his hands resting flat on the polished wood. ""I know.""

The double doors opened, and the room went completely still.

Claire entered, accompanied by Harrison, her lead attorney, and two forensic auditors. She wore a tailored charcoal business suit, her hair pulled back into a sleek, professional ponytail. She sat down at the opposite end of the table, opening a sleek leather folder. She didn't look at Alexander with malice; she looked at him as a creditor looks at a defaulting borrower.

""Good morning, gentlemen,"" Claire began, her voice crisp and commanding. ""As of 8:00 AM, Vance Capital has purchased thirty-four percent of Moretti Group’s outstanding voting shares on the open market, combined with the fifteen percent transferred to my personal trust under the prenuptial agreement default clauses.""

Richard Moretti gasped. ""You... you hold the majority voting bloc.""

""I do, Richard,"" Claire said gently, addressing her father-in-law. ""For six years, you told me that I didn't understand the complexities of corporate finance whenever I asked why Alexander’s family obligations superseded his duties as a father. It turns out, I understand finance quite well. Better than your son, certainly.""

Alexander didn't fight it. He lowered his head, feeling the crushing weight of total defeat settle onto his shoulders. ""What do you want, Claire? Take the company. Take the buildings. Just let me see Leo.""

Claire looked at him, her eyes softening with a flicker of genuine pity. ""The company doesn't interest me, Alexander. Julian will oversee the restructuring and appoint an independent board. Your father will retain his pension, and the Moretti name will stay on the foundation. But you will step down as CEO immediately.""

""And Leo?"" Alexander choked out, tears finally breaking free and tracking down his hollow cheeks. ""Please. Don't take my son away from me.""

""You took yourself away from him, Alexander,"" Claire said, sliding a single document across the long table. ""This is a court-supervised custody agreement. You will have no visitation for six months. During that time, you will undergo mandatory family counseling and step away from the public eye. If—and only if—your therapist certifies that you understand what it actually means to be a father, you will be allowed two supervised hours every other weekend at a neutral location.""

Alexander grabbed the pen with shaking hands and signed his name on the dotted line without reading a single other clause. ""I'll do it. I'll do whatever it takes.""

Claire closed her folder and stood up. ""I hope you do, Alexander. Not for my sake, but for his. Because unlike you, I will never let our son feel unwanted.""
